If not AVB, then who?

Article by e-Spurs Deputy Editor Marc Ashed

Andre Villas Boas has been nothing short of fantastic as manager of our beloved Tottenham Hotspur. Say what you will about the pace of our play or the attractiveness at times but the culture around the club has changed. We have moved into a modern football club filled with tactical nuance and new structure. AVB is largely responsible for that. His press conferences are filled with charismatic quips, charm and an expert handling of the media. That being said, AVB will not be here forever. He has already said that he doesn't plan on coaching beyond 5-10 years and it is easy for one to see him move to greener pastures. He rejected advances from PSG and Real Madrid this past summer and if his body language says anything, he doesn't seem to be as enthusiastic or happy this season as he was last year. We may not be so lucky this time if a team like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Monaco come in for him. We need to sign him to an extension as soon as possible but if he doesn't want to extend, then we need to look at a few worthy successors.

Frank de Boer is my personal choice. Ajax play the most beautiful system of football in the world. Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen are two examples of players that were brought up and nurtured through the youth system and their technical ability is second to none. He has led Ajax to multiple Eredivisie championships and sent out competitive sides in the Champions League year after year against the best that the game has to offer. The Ajax preference for 4-3-3 fits with our current personnel and de Boer's vast experience developing young talent bodes well for the further development of Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll, Danny Rose, Alex Pritchard and getting the most out of players like Lewis Holtby, Vlad Chiriches and Kyle Walker. He also has the personality to take the reins at a history rich football club like Tottenham that loves to play beautiful football.

Mauricio Pochettino has been doing a good job at pushing Southampton to another level. He doesn't have a strong command of the English language but there is no doubting the attractiveness of Southampton's current style of play. He would instantly have a bond with his compatriot Erik Lamela and help him to settle and thrive. The downside of Pochettino is that he does not have a proven track record of success. He won 33% of games at Espanyol and in his short tenure at Southampton, he's won around 40% of his games.

Laurent Blanc was almost our manager in 2012. He was a top competitor to AVB for the head position and is only on a 2 year deal at PSG at the moment. It is clear that they are using him to warm the seat there before going for a bigger name. Blanc brings the same modern philosophy that AVB does. His ideology is similar to our current leader's: ball retention, quick pressing and playing out from the back.

What makes these 3 men stand out is their individual fits in Tottenham's history and club philosophy. Flair, attacking football and creativity fits the man just as much as the football team that he puts out. These 3 coaches could have a field day with players like Townsend, Lamela, Eriksen, Holtby, Paulinho and Soldado at their disposal.

AVB has done as much for the club in 18 months as Harry did in his whole tenure but he will not be here forever and we need to keep an eye towards the future. In my humble opinion, the future with Frank de Boer at the helm would continue to see us rise amongst the greatest clubs in the world.

AVB is clueless, he will disappear up his own arsehole looking at tactic boards, even that Neanderthal Allardyce outwitted him.

  5. The post at 1:55 clearly missed the point of this article. Article was saying, we need to sign AVB long term, he has done more than any manager in history of Spurs. If AVB doesnt love the atmosphere at the club and doesnt sign a longer deal this year, then next year is the last on his deal.

  7. I guess if you have a blog (one big enough to have a deputy editor no less) you need to keep the articles coming.

I expect that if you go to a mates wedding at the reception you start speculating who his next wife will be.

Regarding your untrue comment: "AVB has done as much for the club in 18 months as Harry did in his whole tenure..."
    a) AVB has not finished 4th yet. Harry did twice.
    b) AVB has not qualified for CL, let alone got to the quarter finals...
    c) Harry got to a cup final - lost, but AVB yet to get to final.
    d) Harry took us from bottom and certain relegation to mid-table in one season, then to never lower than 5. AVB started with 4th-place team and went down to 5th.
    e) Harry raised the profile of Spurs through attractive football and great results. We are currently boring spectators...
    f) In Harry's last season, he finished fourth despite only being allowed to spend 7m all season - on Scott Parker. This season we spent over 10 times that, and we need to improve in order to finish top 4.
I am not saying that Harry is better or whatever, but AVB has a long way to go. He has been very fortunate to get the Porto, Chelsea AND Spurs jobs despite only having previously only 1 full season of experience. Tactically AVB is being shown up... Allardyce tactically outwitted AVB. Bruce nearly did. Both with far inferior and cheaply assembled squads compared to ours. I believe that AVB can get it going, but he needs to loosen and adapt his system for the premier league.

Manager, players and fans play a big part for performance and club success.
Some relegated based team survived due to fans fantastic support till the end...
    with only one word...BELIEVE.

Will not be surprised to see AVB and some star players(Vertonghen/Eriksen/Paulinho or even Townsend leaves because of some fans.

People who believe who SERIOUSLY believe that AVB's comments regarding the atmosphere at WHL were meant as anything other than a RALLYING CALL for supporters to HELP make stadium the intimidating fortress it once was, are either over-sensitiveness or AGENDA DRIVEN!!!

Villas-Boas knows the potential The Lane has to generate an atmosphere and noise unrivalled by any other stadium in the land, and was simply stating that the energy which makes our Historic ground so SPECIAL, has been missing for the majority of the current campaign.

The fans of ANY club have the capacity to alter/effect their teams fortunes on the field by their action/focus off it!!! Therefore, the supporters have a RESPONSIBILITY to THEMSELVES, more tan anyone else, to do their best to see ensure there desires manifest.
As far as the incessant moans and groans that accompany every misplaced pass or turnover in possession go, I can assure you that those involved are only doing more harm, than good.

It's time to look at the bigger picture!!!

If you want the best results, you MUST do your best to see them materialise...

Er I seem to recall losing a 12 point lead over Arsenal and finishing 1 point behind in 5th!!
Ifthats AVBs acheivment in 18 months over Harrys tenure, you sir are somewhere over the rainbow.Tactics, strategy ?Avb wouldnt now them if they stood up in his soup.If scraping 1 goal wins s is gifted football nuance,Oh dear says I.

You clown, the 12 point lead was in Harry's last season, not in AVB's time. Idiot.

I really think AVB did well last season. I didn't agree with selling VDV but Modric was going to go anyway and to finish that season with our record points take is an amazing achievement especially considering it was his first season in charge. If I were Levy, I'd be locking him up in the basement of WHL :)

Might as well be Redknapp, because without AVB we've got a relegation battle.
