Accolades for Andros, Iceland’s Impossible Dream, Determined Daws and Other News

There was a match on Friday that involved a young Tottenham player. Did anyone watch it? Oh right, it was the England match where Andros Townsend became the next incarnation of Diego Maradona, according to the media outlets. I am sure they will be just as nice to him in their next piece after he has an average performance. This is what is wrong with the English media. So quick to build a young kid up because he has this great match performance, because he came from nowhere and had something like 10 loan spells over the past 4 years, because he got called up for the England National Team and because he offered something that the vast majority of England regulars do not, which is effort and ability, only to bring him down when he cannot replicate such a blinder of a performance. This represents the fickleness of the media as well as the fans.

Media Darlings

We expect all young players to play like Messi and Ronaldo from the first minute they step on the pitch and when they cannot, they become yesterday’s news and journeymen, a reminder of what has happened to the hundreds of young hot-shots who came before and how quickly they were discarded into the trash heap with the label of “wasted potential”. Yes, Andros had a good match, he was a constant threat against a Montenegro side that although boasting the likes of Steven Jovetic, should not be considered an elite side (neither should England and anyone who disagrees is completely off their rocker) but he played very well, setting up a goal and scoring one from outside the box. His pace and willingness to engage the opposition was nice to see as the majority of Roy Hodgson’s matches in charge have been boring and to be fair, while effective at times, very slow and methodical in their play. Going back to Townsend’s performance, he completed a very high percentage of his dribbles and seemed to be the only real attacking option in the side as he constantly was around the ball, willing to receive passes and turn and run at his marker at every chance he had, which is nice to see as this represents the young lad having a great deal of confidence in his abilities. I am sure that Andros will play a big part for Tottenham this term but will he become an England regular? Maybe, but that all depends on the decisions of the manager and the players drive towards the constant improvement and refinement of his all-around game. Oh and Harry is responsible for his development as well cause you know, whenever a microphone is put near his mouth, he cannot resists the chance to pat himself on the back on what a wonderful job he did with the players at his disposal. Somewhere, Kevin Prince Boateng, Vedran Corluka and Roman Pavlyuchenko are having a laugh.

The Iceman Cometh

It seems that the tiny island nation of Iceland is in good position to make the World Cup playoffs as they sit in second place in Group E, one point above Slovenia, and with only one match left, they are within striking distance of making the impossible dream a reality. Iceland have to travel to fellow Scandinavian nation Norway for the final match against a team that has already been eliminated from the 2014 World Cup and if they were to grab all three points, they may be able to be one of the top two seeded nations when the playoff round begins. Although boasting a population of less than 400,000, the island nation has exceeded all expectations thus far and through the play and crucial goals by Gylfi Sigurðsson and Ajax striker Kolbeinn Sigþórsson, they are on the verge of battling with the big boys and making the final 32 for next summer’s World Cup. I always root for the underdog and as Iceland would represent one of the most intriguing underdogs of all time, it would be fantastic for this island nation to make the finals as it would represent a nice change from the usual footballing nations.

Dawson’s Thoughts

For our club captain to speak of how heartbreaking the recent loss was at the hands of our London rival, West Ham, says a lot as he has always been one to wear his heart on his sleeve and give 100%. He spoke to the official club website and said that the loss stayed with him for more than 3 days and that it really bothered him. I’m glad it bothered him as it ruined my friggin weekend, not to mention the two weeks following thanks to the perfectly timed international break, and it should bother everyone who is associated with club as it was one of the worst performances I have ever witnessed by any of my club teams. The real problem here is that while it bothered him, what bothers me so much is the fact that he is constantly either having man of the match performances or complete nightmares with little to no consistency so every time he steps onto the pitch, its either Fillet Mignon or Salisbury Steak. Look, I’ll get down on Salisbury Steak every now and again but the Mignon is what keeps me satisfied and coming back to the table. As I have stated numerous times, our club captain is now on borrowed time as the clock is ticking and in a few short weeks either of our other center backs will be coupled with Jan in the center of our defense. Sorry Michael, but that is the sad truth and you would be blind to not realise it.

Other News

Kyle Walker picked up a yellow card in the England match this past Friday and while it may suck for the England National Team, it is welcomed news for the Tottenham supporter with no love for the National side. He deserves a break and hopefully he will return to Spurs lodge before the England match against Poland to work with AVB and the Tottenham squad until our next match at Aston Villa.

I bet Theo Walcott was not so impressed by Andros Townsend’s performance this past Friday. Thanks to his injury, which hopefully will keep him out for the remainder of eternity, the door was open for Hodgson to select Andros as he needed a real threat down the wing and thanks

to his good form for Spurs, it was a simple choice. A choice that although seemed like the most logical one, the media had to turn this obvious decision into a masterstroke by the England manager as if to say that Roy grabbed a complete unknown and he performed as if he was the second coming of Pele. But back to poor little Theo, it looks like you got some real competition on your hands for that right side of the England midfield. Hope you crash and burn Theo.

That should be that. Hope you all enjoyed today’s dose and don’t forget to comment regardless if you like it or not. Thanks for reading! COYS!
