What's in a Derby?

Article by Chris Mecoy

Hello again, Spurs fans.

Well, I hope you've all recovered from the debacle at the weekend. We all know that a 3-0 loss at home to West Ham, a side that are average at best, is inexcusable. However, let's not blow things way out of proportion.

Personally, I would have been more offended had we dominated them for 90 minutes and they snuck in a 89th minute 1-0 win. At least this way, we can just put it down to a bad day at the office. But, despite what I hope to be a one off, it did get me thinking.

DERBY PERFORMANCES

In my opinion, this season we have underperformed in just two and a half matches so far. Okay, so we didn't set the world alight in games against Norwich, Palace and Swansea, but I feel that was more down to the ultra-defensive tactics of our opponents.

I truly believe that we have failed to perform in the West Ham game, the North London derby, and the second half against Chelsea.Which means, with the exception of the Palace win, and let's face it, it was ONLY Palace, we have failed to deliver only in games against our three biggest local rivals.

This is a worrying trend.

These are the games where our boys should be showing MORE passion, MORE belief, and MORE heart than any others, not less, and let's not lie, it's not because we have foreigners that don't understand the meaning of a London derby, because we had 5 Englishmen in the side on Sunday who also didn't perform to their true standards, and these are 5 men who should know exactly what a local derby means to the fans of Tottenham.

TURNCOATS

Now, as I say, let's hope this is just a coincidence, but what has me more worried is the apparent turn on our team from some of our 'fans'. As a member of the Facebook group 'Tottenham Hotspur (Audere Est Facere), a group I advise you all to request to join, I have seen one or two fans showing a quite frankly shocking level of discontent towards the team this season. This is unforgivable.

To support us when we are winning is easy, but you must also support us when we don't win. To state such terms as "Soldado isn't good enough", "Lamela is rubbish", or even, and I have seen this, I promise, "bring Harry back, he has more passion than AVB", is borderline lunacy.

We have our best squad in 50 years and despite the shock of the West Ham game, we will be a force this year.

IT'S NOT ALL BAD

I am certain that these derby day woes are merely just a case of 'you can't win 'em all', and we will start to perform in the following Capital clashes, but there really is a huge silver lining should this not be the case. Other than these three matches, we have won ALL of the other 9 matches so far this season. If that trend continues, we will end the season with a Europa League victory, more than likely at least one domestic cup, and a whopping 87 points in the Premier League.

That theory is more hopeful than guaranteed, I grant you, but dreaming about success has been a huge part of my life as a Spurs fan! So, if we can sort out the performances in the big games for the rest of the season, there really is no reason whatsoever to doubt that 2013 could be the big trophy-laden season that ALL of us have been dreaming about!

COME ON YOU SPURS!!

To be honest mate you seem a level headed supporter but Spurs got smashed bya better team on the day with better tactics who had more shots on & of target made more tackles, It was not just a bad day at the office it could have been 4 or 5. Its football in the EPL Defoe did not take his chances and the opponents did.
