Why Willian Loss is a blessing in disguise for spurs
Just under two months ago, Tottenham fans were salivating at the prospect of having highly rated Brazilian attacker, Willian, from Russian mega-money and unpronounceable side Anzhi Makhachkala, playing alongside new signings Nacer Chadli, ex Corinthians holding-midfielder Paulinho, and then record signing Roberto Soldado, a Spanish talisman who was recently acquired from Valencia for a fee of around £26m.

After both clubs had agreed a multi-million pound bid, reported to be in the region of £30m, and all medical worries vanquished, the notorious Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho swooped in to turn the number 10 to the southern side of the capital. Many Spurs fans were angered how ‘the special one’ had changed to ‘the sneaky one ‘and tore a potentially 3rd record signing from spurs right under his own apprentice’s nose. But, is it a real downer on spurs and could Mr Mourinho really have done his old assistant a favour.
Tottenham’s transfer activities had turned more than a few heads. With the lilywhites splashing the cash over the summer, they have been tipped by many, including Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, Manchester United Veteran Ryan Giggs and even rival manager and local cheapskate Arsene Wenger, as a dark horse in the ever developing Emmerdale episode that is title race. Despite the departure of one Mr Bale to Spanish Giants, Real Madrid, it has produced some positives.
Due to ‘ The Galacticos ‘ seemingly infinite Bank account, Tottenham had a spending power that has allowed them to make some impressive additions to an already powerful squad. And unlike a certain team that us, as spurs fans, do not mention, we are using it to its full capacity. We had almost spent £60 million pounds and still had more to spend with the additional funds of our welsh wizards departure along with the shifting of fringe players such as Scott Parker and Tom Huddlestone. Despite the unquestionable ability of Willian, £30m is an awful lot of money for a player that has only played 10 games in the 2012/13 season and is still yet to play in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Willian has made his name playing in a role just behind the striker that was previously taken up by ‘Rafa’ van der Vaart. However, despite a shaky start to his spurs career, Sigurdsson was really improving during the 2nd half of last season and has impressed at the beginning of this one, scoring 4 goals. The Icelander, 24, also announced that he was “finally settled on and off the pitch” after the game at Selhurst Park. Therefore, the £30m investment in the young Brazilian could have been money wasted.
Thankfully the money was used to fund two of Spurs’ most promising stars. Erik Lamela, who scored or assisted 33 times in his 66 games with his previous club Roma, and is only 21, looks already highly talented and a key addition to the squad along with Christian Eriksen, who looks like a really shrewd buy from AVB. For only £11 million, the young Dane looks like a he could be a great Dane with already 2 assists and a goal in his short time at the lane.
So, I know it hurts losing a star player to local rivals Chelsea, keeping their tradition of nurturing young academy talent for an absolutely necessary reason at reasonable prices, but if you take a step back, and look at all of the positives out of this situation, I believe, at least, that it could be a blessing in disguise for AVB’s warriors.

On the contrary, a lot of Spurs fans (including myself) were decidedly luke-wark about Willian.
ReplyDeleteMy personal preference, before the Summer even started, was for Christain Ericksen. Willian is a more accomplished player, true, but Ericksen is younger, far cheaper and, crucially in my opinion, he offers more goal-threat and has greater potential.
I don't want shifty little tossers at my club thank you. totally glad he went to probably the most suitable club for him, a club for big headed, dirty, sneaky (UNTS. Just like terry the racist.
