Where do we go from here?

Article by Shaun Simon.

The answer to that question is ultimately time. The board should be reviewing the performance of the manager and the overall organisation of his team. Targets must be set and then reacting to those targets by Christmas. Today we looked as though there was no organisation. No desire was shown, and questions must be asked as to where the motivation is coming from for the players to perform? I’ve seen fans shout ‘manager out’ after a few games when things aren’t going so well.

I’ve tried not to have those negative feelings towards Andre Villas Boas, believing he’d turn this season around but there is nothing positive to hold onto. Some fans will label people like me fickle, but when you’re putting your heart and soul into supporting a hundred-million pound team languishing down in 9th position and looking clueless I have a right to have ruthless thoughts. I’ve been reduced to tears on about three occasions in my life watching Spurs. Though there was no crying today, there was that stiff feeling in your jaw when you feel you are being consumed by anger. Over the years I’ve seen us play bad. I’ve seen us having no idea of what we’re doing but trying our hardest, but today was a totally gutless performance. The worst I’ve seen us play in a long time.

Apart from Sandro, today’s game against Manchester City taught me everything I need to know about the players. Sandro was the only one out there who put everything on the line today. I don’t know where we’d be without him. He tried to drive us forward, tackled to the point of almost being booked due to lack of backing from his midfield colleagues. Ran so much he threw up his breakfast on the turf. He led the war cries before the match, but it seems like he was the only one who heard his roaring encouragement.

Paulinho was an absolute disgrace today. Worst game I’ve seen from any player in a long time. I’ve never seen such lack of heart on a football pitch in years. Not on one occasion did he look like he was interested in beating his man to the ball. He bottled every 50/50 ball out there. He tracked back in 2nd gear. I’ve backed this guy for a long time with claims that given the right approach he could be immense for us. Maybe I’ve got it totally wrong. The man has no backbone. I can’t help but look at our ex-English midfielders such as Livermore, Parker and Huddlestone who were grumbling during the summer about managers having blind preference towards foreign imports. Livermore or Parker in particular maybe weren’t the most gifted midfielders we’ve ever had, but at least they didn’t coward his way through games like Paulinho did today.

How long can we continue to protect the current form of Erik Lamela? Fair enough he’s only 21, at his age he is old enough to step into a team and man-up. He’s been playing top level football for years now. At River Plate he played 36 games over two years, for Roma he played 62 games over a two year period. He’s been capped six times by his country but months into his Spurs career he can’t even roll his sleeves up and we’ve been creating excuse after excuse for it. When I used to play park football on a Sunday morning had I been having a bad game I’d make sure I ran my heart out. Where my limited ability had deserted me I’d try and make up with effort and running. Erik Lamela runs about looking very scared and shy like the geek at the party afraid to dance. At some point you just have to find that switch inside, flick it and show some fire. He had a very disappointing game and looking at him you do ask yourself when is this player going to show us what he’s all about. The longer he’s stuck under this cloud the more he’ll suffer.

Soldado had a shocker as well. There is a section of the Spurs supports that constantly try to use stats to prove why he should be leading our strike force instead of Defoe. I’ve never understood it, and from today I will never understand it. Soldado may drop in deep and knock a ball off to the wingers but Defoe does something no other player in our squad seems to be able to do at the moment and that is show movement. Defoe is our only goal threat plain and simple. I’ve said on occasions Soldado was a panic buy, for a team with only one striker you don’t go out and buy another who can only give you the same option, especially if they are on the short side. The way we play doesn’t allow for miniature goal poachers to flourish. We need complete strikers who can play up top by themselves comfortably.

Lennon was his usual self devoid of ideas, running into dead-end alleys and utter reluctance to attack the fullback. Walker, I always try not to criticise him too much because on days like today, for all of his mistakes, he was at least full of running and looking like he cared. The rest of the defence can’t even take much criticism today as any defence would have struggled given such lack of protection from the players in front of them. Lewis Holtby let me down as well today. It was his chance to really nail down a place in the team and he disappointed and showed lack of guile and vision on many occasions. In spite of that he should not have been taken off before Paulinho.

What can AVB do from here? When a crisis comes looming you have to look at the players
who display bravery, experience and heart. Tactically, go slightly uglier and direct showing a bit of fight to get out of the given situation. We need defenders who will defend their keeper, midfielders who protect such as Sandro. Today Dembele showed some spirit, trying to bring the fight to them. Though he doesn’t favour that defensive midfield roll he seems the best of a bad bunch right now to partner Sandro. Up top has to be Adebayor or Defoe. Emmanuel is the only target man we’ve got and Defoe loves his club and sometimes you need players with that club pride. To make it simple, use your players to their strengths.

If the manager can’t perform and things don’t look like they are going to improve, surely he has to go! I’m big on giving managers time, but this could end up a real mess carrying on with Mr Villas Boas. Maybe I should have helped my wife shampoo the carpets after all, I probably wouldn’t have felt as bad as I do now.

I think you will find a lot the problems at Spurs in BAE's quote "I'll come back to Spurs when avb goes"says it all for me.

Totally agree with the Soldado bit, he is pretty much the same type of striker as Defoe. This lone striker formation won't work with either of those, hence 9 goals scored all season. I have to say about Dawson, although I love his never say die attitude and putting his body on the line for the club, he is just not good enough. AVB's stubborn attitude was his downfall at Chelsea and I fear it will be his downfall at Spurs.

AVB is dragging us down the same way he did at Chelsea......i don't think he will last until Christmas, i can see the players losing faith and respect in him, 0-3 against Spammers, 0-1 Newcastle, 6-0 Man City, he is clueless and sets us up to win 1-0 and not concede but when we go a goal down his plan is out of the window, he cannot motivate the player's, plays only one system whoever we are playing and has no plan b, there is no settled first 11 as he chops and changes personnel and positions constantly, the balance is terrible, no left back, no width, no quick passing or getting forward quickly, no quick through balls or balls over the defense for the striker to run onto, no decent crosses or service to Soldado, etc etc etc.
I can see Levi looking for new managers today as after the Newcastle defeat you could see he was totally pissed, i like Pochettino as he plays good attacking football with a strong defense and with a limited budget and has totally turned Southampton into a really good side, he also has the look of someone that has the total respect of his players and won't lose it which unfortunately AVB i feel does not, look at all the top managers and they have the respect of everyone by the person they are and the way they manage, example's are Sir Alex, Wenger, Mourinho when he isn't being a cock.
Change will be here soon and i would take a punt on Pochettino definately.

There nothing that £500m-£800m spent on players would not cure , please remember Man City are a sovereign wealth fund !!! They are in a completely different league financially . Spurs will NEVER compete for the EPL without Chelsea /Man C levels of cash. Without that or CL cash and kudos to attract the best players there is no chance. Please bear in mind rsene Wenger said he was "aware" of every play Spurs signed in the summer the inference not a single one was good enough for Arsenal and they were supposed to be the CL team in most trouble !! LOL wake up to the fact that the CL and EPL are now closed shops impossible to break into without sovereign or Oligarch wealth Spurs have neither. Sad but true.

I've defended AVB to my season ticket holding mate for ages now, but he's right. The bloke's a tactical cretin. We could ramble on all day about what's wrong, there are so many things that are wrong. Dawson has a lot of heart but he's not good enough, get Chriches back ASAP. Vertonghen is a legend but he'll soon have had enough, in fact you can already see it. And as good as he is at LB he's too important in the centre for me. Sandro is probably our best player full stop, coming back from a lengthy injury and being far and away our best player is, quite frankly, humiliating for all the others. Paulinho doesn't look interested, it's true, leave him out and give Dembele a run in a more creative role, he's not being used effectively enough (just like everyone else tbh). Lamela is showing glimpses of greatness but don't forget some players take a long time to get used to the Premier League, which is why it was so dumb bringing in so many new faces that hadn't played in it before. The strikers are not good enough either. Defoe is far better than Soldado because Soldado only really scores from cut backs. The inverted wingers we've played for most of the season will not produce cut backs - only Walker's runs have provided Soldado with his 'chances'. Defoe offers more but is too often a headless chicken. Adebayor suits the system best but AVB knows better of course. In short, we've been hiding behind the 'give them time to gel' rubbish for long enough now. Truly great players would have gelled after a handful of games. We need a striker that can create his own chances, simples. And players that actually give a damn.

Holtby is not a No 10.
Defoe isnt good enough, it doesnt so far appear as if Soldado is any better, but nor is JD.
Leading on from above, Ade is only bloke capable of playing on his own, is he back now??
Paulinhio needs a break. For whatever reason, hes not the same player we signed!
Rose has been a huge loss!! - If we released Benny, we should have signed another LB!!!!!!
Why doesnt Lennon take his FB on??? - Plays with back to goal instead of on half turn?!
NO MIDFIELDERS MAKE ANY RUNS BEYOND SOLDADO?!!?!????!!!!!! -

    ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

By the way where was Townsend on Sunday? he has been our most dangerous player going forward this season, where is Chadli? also can't believe everyone is slating Soldado, he is getting zero service with 6 players round him in the oppositions area and everyone is saying he is useless, give him the crosses and balls through and he will score for fun...youtube it and you will see him banging in the goals for Valencia because there wingers and midfielders can put in quality balls for him and thats where we are lacking.
We have just spent over £100 million on new players and with a decent manager we would be in the top 3 at least. I don't agree that we can't compete with the top 4 with a great squad that we have, it's the manager that's the problem.

  8. Is it me of outside of Bale were we really any good last season? The football was exactly what we are seeing now except Bale would produce something spectacular to give us the points. AVB hasn't changed his system but is now exposed without his talisman. Looking at Defoe's premier league scoring record would keep him on the subs bench permanently. If I was playing for Spurs and come from Brazil I would be losing the will right now too. Sitting listening to AVB spurt his theories must be starting to wain a little. The players know how good they and the rest are. We have a great squad. We signed Dembele who scores goals and can go round people for fun and play him as a defensive midfielder, that to me sums it up. Can you imagine if Harry had had this set of players what we would be watching?? I rest my case.

Why are you letting your wife shampoo the carpets and not getting a professional carpet cleaner in? If the concentration of the water and shampoo is not right, you could have an expensive disaster on your hands!

Don't care what the circumstances are, you shouldn't lose 6-0 to anyone in your division, especially after investing almost £100 million into an already talented squad!! This wasn't just a defeat on the road - it was a mauling and AVB should actually have offered his resignation after that! I have always backed him and had hoped that we were slowly turning the corner after the 3-0 defeat against West Ham, but I can't see any improvement!! At this point I'd take Harry back with open arms and get players playing in their favoured positions and expressing themselves. Yes Harry has his limitations, but we never lost by 3 goals at home and never lost by 6, without even looking like grabbing a few goals ourselves! With the squad we've got, it has to be 442 at home and a similar formation away, with replacements able to slot into favoured positions. Someone please tell me what's wrong with a simple 442 comprising of: Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, BAE, Sandro, Paulinho, Lennon, Townsend, Soldado, Defoe? Our back-up 11 to that is Friedel, Naughton, Dawson, Chiriches, Fryers/Rose, Kapoue, Dembele, Lamela, Sigurdsson, Adebayor, Kane. That's also without other similar loaned players like Tom Carroll, who wouldn't look out of place in our squad now. It's blindingly obvious that we have the talent and depth of squad, but the wrong system and manager in charge!! Change it quickly AVB or next week's game could be your last at Spurs...

It was unfortunate we conceded after 15 seconds,it was a disaster start, but the next 20 minutes said everything about us this season. Hang on to the ball, side to side, no one making the runs to open up the space or angles anywhere, and to much turning back towards our own goal. Its hard to stomach, but we need to look forward, its over as is every other match and season before it, we've all been here before, and it hurts just as bad everytime.
Who knows may be a hammering from Man U, and a couple of draws in the next couple of matches could put paid to AVB, we cant control that.
However lets just take a quick look at some of the players, Saldado, couldn't have hit all those goals last season by chance, he clearly has something. Lamela has a serenity in his movement, that you can sense there is something natural about his talent. Granted he looks very weak, but its upto to the backroom team to strengthen him up, to deal with Premiership. Paulinho is going to be a key figure in the Brazil assault on the World Cup, thats not my view but the view of Brazilians, Sandro is a beast, I could go on, but it wouldnt change the result and how we feel.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be expecting more, we should, hell we deserve it
Of course my patience is starting to wear a bit thin as well with AVB's style, but this is his system based on the experience he has at the moment, the guy is only 36.
We need to take a collective deep breath, accept we will have some tough heartbreaking days ahead but we must believe our time is now. We need to believe AVB is someone who learns fast, and manages to find a way to instill a passion for success and belief in their own abilities, to be able to step out onto the pitch and deal with every situation which will come, and keep fighting to realise our dreams of success, as well as their own.
So next time we concede after 15 seconds, go down 3-0 at halftime or whatever painful episode we are facing, lets all believe that the team has the strength and belief to turn it round. The process has been long and painful, we have been growing and growing slowly there will be bad days, but its our time now, and nothing can stop it.
