Winning Mentality

Article by John Coppin

Spurs have made a strong start to the season. In fact, the best start they have ever had in the premier league. At the moment they are just 5 points off the top of the table and have easily qualified for the knock out stages of the Europa League. This side has developed a strong spine and know how to win ugly. That is the sign not only of a good side but a side with belief.

This will set off a few alarms bells because a lot of fans will point to the goals tally and say it leaves a lot to be desired. In fact there can be a case made that some of the results could have gone the other way and this position is false. However, the points are on the table and their record this season speaks for itself. Spurs have played 18 games this season and lost only 2.

Let us look at this more closely. Spurs were the last side to concede in the Europa cup. In the premier league Spurs have kept 7 clean sheets out of 10. This has been done with a side that has 7 new players and is still fusing together. This side will gel and be more fluid as the season progresses. To boast such a formidable defence with all the new additions points to a very strong unit with tremendous organisation. The strength and power in the midfield means that those athletes close down opposition players quickly and deny time on the ball. The fast pressing game has worked and this reflects in the position in the table having scored only 9 goals. That is a remarkable achievement. Added to all this; there has been injuries to players and even though other players have replaced them in the team Spurs are still very difficult to break down. A classic example of that is Cheriches, who is a novice to the toughest league in the world but has yet to concede a goal in his appearances so far.

AVB has a system in place and it is working. This team has self belief and wins. There will be challenges this season and it is a very long hard race. I think we must commend AVB for his tactical expertise and instilling a winning mentality in Spurs. No longer are Spurs a team that is easy to get to or possess a soft core.

It was said that after the Bale departure Spurs would struggle yet they have more points than at this time last season. Any team in the world would miss Bale; what is clear is that this is a team and it does not rely on one brilliant individual. Any team with new players would take time to adjust to each other especially in this very tough league. The fact that Spurs are in a healthy position after 10 games with less goals than Man City who have a goal difference of 17 and sit one point above them shows the mental toughness that bides well for the future. All of this with a team in transition.

I think avb is bringing our team on in the right way they now know how to defend and keep possession and now he is going to teach them to take more risks in attacking and on top of that the team is really starting to gel . I think after Xmas we will really start to see the finished article and I for one can't wait. COYS
