How Dumb is Daniel Levy?

Article by Jon Lewis

When my kids were little they indulged the misapprehension that to be rich, that to get rich, you had to be smart. As a college professor it’s not exactly the sort of thinking I encouraged, and fortunately Donald Trump, the states’ high profile rich idiot came into their orbit in time. They know better now. Jerry Jones, the idiot owner of the Dallas Cowboys helped make a second lesson stick … that hands-on billionaire team owners generally make a mess of things (over and over again – because they can).

Jose Mourinho said after the City game that "It's better to lose 6-0 once than 1-0 six times." But the addendum I guess is that you get to lose that badly once, but twice gets you canned. The team probably was going in the wrong direction, but the players need to take the blame -- ya, the high line never worked – no one seemed comfortable with the 4-3-3 (or the 4-2-3-1) but guys talented enough to play in the EPL should be able to play any system. My son's college team changes formation and strategy all the time and the kids adapt.

So where are we now? AVB walks with appr. $1.8 million – he's taking a battering in the press and (though it’s all for the best) he may never get a job in England again. On ESPNFC Ian Darke said AVB was "clearly out of his depth," which I don't think is fair -- and Craig Burley suggested that AVB was too intellectual and remote, which is probably true – but the real culprit is Levy, who hired AVB knowing exactly what he was getting and then, because he’s rich, because he can, tossed AVB to the curb for another new model.

The names getting kicked around to succeed AVB are interesting; good thing, because that may be all we have to talk about this season. Capello won Champions League way back when but didn’t he do a crappy job coaching England? Laudrup’s team was great last year – but not so good this year -- so now we want to hire him? Klinsmann (who just this week signed a 4 year deal with the USMNT) is a great coach I think, but I understand he really likes living in SoCal where it never rains -- and there’s Pochettino, the guy who had such a nice start with Southampton (they’re fading, though the good news for them is that they play Spurs next). De Boer, Tuchel, Yakin all have jobs they might not want to lose (especially since Levy tends to tire of toys fast).

So what’s Plan B (besides finishing 7th)?

I’ve seen enough of Tim Sherwood already. Against an awful West Ham team he played a mostly pre-AVB team that looked bright for maybe 30 minutes but in the end did the one thing AVB’s teams haven’t done in a long time – blown a lead. He played two players (Rose and Adebayor) who had no chance of playing 90 minutes, so when things went south (and Townsend pulled up lame) he was fucked.

The firing is boneheaded because we’ve traded one inexperienced coach for another with even less experience. I’m frankly tired of hearing about Levy’s business savvy and we can’t kick him to the curb now can we.

I’m writing this in anger (I just watched the Cup loss). First we lost Modric and then we lost Bale. Levy is blaming AVB but the failure to hold on to our two best players is what's wrong with Spurs and that's on Levy. AVB has had some pretty awful luck (Spurs’ luck) -- having to go into the game against Liverpool without Vertongen, Chiriches and Rose and then Sandro gets hurt 10 minutes in ... Sandro’s injury last year – what other coach could have finished with a record points total playing Scottie P and Huddlestone in the middle all year. Ya, Bale was great … but we were in all those games he won for us -- Levy failed to hold on to Bale. Suarez is still playing for Liverpool. I rest my case.

I'm thinking we finish 7th and maybe lose Walker and Sandro (or God help me, Vertongen) in the summer -- we're in worst case scenario-ville. Good luck getting a coach to sign on for this.

Last nights game was just a total fxxking embarrassment to lose at HOME to a poor poor team like west ham.
People may disagree but I`ve said it once and will say it again “I blame Levy all the time”.. whatever manager we will employ to manage our team he will never be left to manage or buy the players he actually wants without Levy and co interfering, Be it Redknapp, AVB or whoever we get next, levy has undermined, overuled and then ultimately sacked them,.
I honestly believe AVB didn`t want half the players we brought,, Moutinho, Oscar, Willian, Coetrao, Villa and Hulk etc etc, and we didn`t get one of them players.. I hope I`m wrong but honestly can`t see our club getting any better whilst it`s run by Levy and co..

Spot on. As much as I want the team to succeed in the long term, I would happily see the club fail miserably this year and finish between 8th and 10th if it made Levy take a long look at himself. A ridiculous sacking and hopefully, to all the idiots that have been saying 'play 4-4-2, play Defoe, play Adebayor' you've now seen why IT DOESN'T WORK!!!
Playing a second string West Ham side at home we lost having taken the lead, wow, isn't that a breath of fresh air. It's like having 'arry back. A frenetic opening 20 minutes, score a goal, overrun in midfield and lose to dross.

The problem wasn't that the high line didn't work - it did, that is why we had such an impressive defensive record until the Citeh game. The problem this: the high line requires personnel who have the pace and awareness to play it. AVB (et al) made decisions. There was reliable info in the summer that Kaboul is the new Ledley King. Therefore, we faced a real prospect of being down to three centre halves. AVB new when he first joined that Daawson can't play a high line, that is why he tried to sell him. Instead, he allowed himself to get saddled with him for two seasons. Chiriches is new, and, according to reports, AVB didn't want him anyway. He wanted versatile players, and that is fine - Vertonghen as well as being a very good centre-half is also reasonably good at left-back. So, fine, if you have two players, good players, for each position, Vertonghen is your third choice left-back. Unfortunately, AVB alienated BAE and shipped him out on loan. He considered Rose/Fryers as sufficient for left-back, only, well, he didn't - because as soon as Rose got injured he refused to trust in Fryers, drafting in either our best centre-half or a right-back, Naughton, who everyone else knew couldn't play left-back. Ultimately, AVB was the head coach, he made these decisions, and the final result was a back line including Dawson and a central midfielder and Naughton, but AVB, not Levy, AVB just wouldn't, even for one game, or until the crisis was over, just abandon the high line and tell them to play a little deeper.

That was the problem, not the high line that did work with the right personnel, but AVB's decisions that left him in a position where three quarters of his back-line consisted of players wholly insisted to playing a high line, coupled with his refusal to show tactical flexibility and drop the high line temporarily because the whole World and his dog could see that he didn't have the personnel to play it!

Re: High line. Yes, he was forced to pick from what he had available. However, there must have talks between AvB and Baldini along the lines of
'Franco, I want to play a high line, I need defenders who can fulfil this role, can you get me some as Dawson is a liability and we have no backup to Jan.'
We got Chirches, failed to get a left back as Benni was rightly frozen out, sold Caulker for who knows what reason. If we're being honest, we've lost 4 centre backs in a few years, King, Kaboul (doubt he'll play more than a handful of games again), Gallas and Caulker. We got in return, Vlad...don't get me wrong, he looks great. But we need extra CBs and an LB.
The buck stops with Baldini, who even if AvB didn't ask him for defenders, should have brought more than Vlad in. Alderweireld moved in the summer, he is versatile enough to play across the back and would have fitted in well with our Belgian contingent.

I would love to have a few hours with AVB Levy and Baldini to get a de-brief!!

I pay a lot of money that I work hard for to watch this lot and I WANT ANSWERS!!! -

    These are my questions:..

    The Back 4:

1)Why release Caulker when Kaboul is nowhere near ready to play even 1 game a week, let alone 2? - Leaving us short of the standard amount of CB's required???
(I imagine poor old Capoue would like an answer to this as well!!!!)

2)Why hire a manger who wants to play a high line, and then make Dawson an integral part of a system he could never fit into??

3)Why release a LB (Benny) when the only other options are Rose, who, is still finding his feet and proving himself?

4)Couple this with the fact, that the only cover for LB is:
    An absolute rookie (Fryers)
A RIGHT FOOTED RIGHT BACK (Naughton)
    Our best CB????? (Vertonghen)

4a) - How about signing another LB in the summer when we CLEARLY needed one?? - If we were stitched up by Real Fuckbag madrid over Contreao, was there no other targets????????

    5) - Considering a manager (AVB) was hired, whose philosophy is based upon a high line and marauding full backs to provide width, why oh why am I asking the above questions after you all sat in a jacuzzi/on a yacht over the summer and had 3 months and £100m to recruit suitable personnel for the managers preferred defensive system?????????????

(Especially given that this year was supposed to be a big league push which always requires defensive consistency)

    Midfield:

1)Who is our No 10? - I can tell you right now, Paulinhio is not a f*****g No 10.

2)Why is Siggurdson played LW when he made his name as No 10 at every other club???

3)Who signed Chadli? - Also,. Why on earth is he played on the wing in the premiership??

    Front 3:

    1) - Why sign Soldado, who is effectively an upgrade (In my opinion) on Defoe, when we needed another CF?

    2) Why sign Soldado and then play with inverted wingers who don't put the ball in the box, to a striker who mad ehis name by finishing chances in the box?????

    3) - There is nothing inherently wrong with inverted wingers, but, as above, why would they play with a 'striker/poacher' instead of a CF who would be more suited to dealing with crowded penalty areas?

    4) - Why play with inverted wingers if you DONT have the right FULL BACKS necessary to provide the MUCH NEEDED WIDTH??????? - SPACE HAS TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE!!!

    A FINAL OBSERVATION: - -

AVB (and now Sherwood) has been very unlucky with injuries, especially to the back 4,.
BUT,. If the balance of player was better, without the overloading of similar attacking players, that are'nt really wingers or good occupy a No 10 role, and the right defenders, this may have been eased..

Why play such strong teams in the Europa League group stages???/ - Honestly, the tournament is a joke!!! - Agin, in my opinion, I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to attend group stage games, knowing I would be watching OUR YOUTH and I would delight in it!! - If we get through, make the decision on if you want to commit to it then,..

THERE IS NO REWARD IN WINNING IT!!!!! - (Winner should be in next year's CL & CL failures should NOT be dropped into it!!)

We have a squad brimming with talent, but the overall balance of the squad is an absolute joke!!!!!! -

I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. - THE SPURS FANS, AS WELL AS THE PLAYING & NON-PLAYING STAFF DESERVE MORE FROM THE JOKE OF MANAGEMENT WE HAVE!!!!

Hells bells, avb gets 60 odd games,Sherwood has 2 days and their calling for him to go ! at that rate we can get about 30 managerial changes before the end of the season. After all avb brown nosed brigades calling he needed more time, shouldnt the next man get a few games?Anyway he's gone ,thank God,just move on.

Arrogant. Vindictive. Boneheaded. A manager's job is to work with the player's he got, not impose some unworkable system he read about and refuse to change. Further weaken the team by refusing to play those he didn't like. Avb managed for himself and not the team. was rightly fired. Levy gave him way more rope than he deserved.

  10. You are obviously a genius, Jon Lewis. Why don't you apply for the Spurs managers job? I'm sure you would impress a man as dumb as Levy!! LOL.

Who Levy will end up hiring is all just media speculation at this moment in time, so why do you take it so seriously, Jon Lewis?

Of course Sherwood played a pre AVB formation. He is one of Harry's appointments after all.. Did Haryy win every cup tie? Of course not. I don't suppose Sherwood will get the managers job, but the result of a single cup tie two days after he took charge is hardly a damning indictment of his abilities, whatever they may be.

  11. Chiriches was found out yesterday. He's not very good in the air!! Good on the deck though. Defensive mid-fielder is his best position?

Capoue is obviously not a centre back.

Now that the high back line seems to have been ditched along with AVB I think Vertonghan and Dawson are our best centre back pairing. Unfortunately Vertonghan is out for some time so Chiriches will have to play as it seems Kaboul is not 100% fit and maybe never will be. Selling Caulker appears to have been a big mistake.

I loved 'Arry. Best thing that ever hapened to Spurs.

The only thing dumber than sacking 'Arry was abandoning the ambitious plan you replaced him with before you've got half way through.

If Levy had given 'Arry the couple of players he wanted...Cahill and Tevez I think...we'd be right up there and still have Bale.

And if the England job had been offered to Harry wold he have turned it down and stayed? no . I really don't understand the anti AVB brigade he had the best win rate of a Spurs coach ever! the most points ever and did so with a weakened team. totally moronic decision and opportunity lost. We have got our Tottenham back alright and it's back to very average but having ago. Marvellous.
