The End of the Innocence

Article by Mark French

Where to start? My original headline was going to be ‘Stick or Twist’ but clearly we twisted.

I was a supporter of AVB and felt IF he could improve on last year’s results, even if we missed out on 3rd/4thspot by a single poor result, we’d have a Manager we could move on to the next level with. We had the new players in so it was perfectly reasonable that we’d achieve this given the time to bed them in. We also had a squad that only Chelsea and City could equal.

Well that was the theory and the dream.

I was so looking forward to putting in comments about the Arsenal result at the Etihad after they let in 6 goals. Not only was that not to be, but we shipped 5 and our performance was **** (you fill in the blanks or add some more to get the expletive you want).

I couldn’t fathom why we didn’t start with the same 11 as the Anzhi game (with the possible exception of Lloris & Walker). So what if we had Rose and Lamela on? At least it would show that AVB had seen how that team had attacked and then shown faith in them to do it again.

If we’d drawn against Liverpool or lost by a goal after an attacking performance we’d live with it.

No, instead we had the return of the ‘Tinkerman’ with another change in players, position and system. No wonder this team folded. No-one seems to know where they stand. As a fan I had no idea either. My faith had gone and although we were still in touch with the top 4 we were out of touch with reality and any sense of progression or knowing we were going in the right direction.

Of course there is the argument we should have stuck with AVB and changing now was bad timing and could be disastrous. But it was already like that. Wasn’t it? It wasn’t the league position, the goals not scored or perhaps even the dropped points. It was the 0-5 mauling (which of course followed the 6-0 mauling by City - but that was away).

With January transfer window coming up it had to be now.

Having seen all of the other excellent articles now posted on e-Spurs there is nothing further for me to add to the post mortem.

We now need to look forward and DL has to make the right choice for our next Manager no matter how long it takes. My choice before the AVB appointment was Martinez but that’s too late now. We need someone with his style of play and ability to mould a team. Any ideas?

Sorry not Capello his style is not ours. Not Glenn, he’s been of Management too long and he was no good first time round either. Please not Di Matteo, look how boring Chelsea were under him! Not Pochettino, he has no more experience than AVB.

Laudrop - I’m not sure about.

What about waiting for Klopp? Or Hiddink after the World Cup?

Having now twisted we need to have the courage of our convictions (or DL’s convictions) and get game.

COYS!

    Klopp??????!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!?!!????!!!!!

Mate,... As if we could ever get Klopp. Honestly,.

Let's start with a few hard truths and burning questions that need to be answered:

    The Back 4:

1)Why release Caulker when Kaboul is nowhere near ready to play even 1 game a week, let alone 2? - Leaving us short of the standard amount of CB's required???
(I imagine poor old Capoue would like an answer to this as well!!!!)

2)Why hire a manger who wants to play a high line, and then make Dawson an integral part of a system he could never fit into??

3)Why release a LB (Benny) when the only other option is Rose, who is still finding his feet and proving himself?

4)Couple this with the fact, that the only cover for LB is:
    An absolute rookie (Fryers)
A RIGHT FOOTED RIGHT BACK (Naughton)
    Our best CB????? (Vertonghen)

4a) - How about signing another LB in the summer when we CLEARLY needed one?? - If we were stitched up by real Fuckbag madrid over Contreao, were there no other targets????????

    5) - Considering a manager (AVB) was hired, whose philosophy is based upon a high line and marauding full backs to provide width, why oh why am I asking the above questions after theey all sat in a jacuzzi/on a yacht over the summer and had 3 months and £100m to recruit suitable personnel for the managers preferred defensive system?????????????

(Especially given that this year was supposed to be a big league push which always starts with defensive consistency)

    Midfield & Front 3:

1)Who is our No 10? - I can tell you right now, Paulinhio is not a f*****g No 10.

2)Why is Siggurdson played LW when he made his name as No 10 at every other club???

3)Who signed Chadli? - Why on earth is he played on the wing in the premiership??

    4) - Why sign Soldado, who is effectively an upgrade (In my opinion) on Defoe, when we needed another CF?

    5) Why sign Soldado and then play with inverted wingers who don't put the ball in the box, to a striker who made his name by finishing chances in the box?????

    6) - There is nothing inherently wrong with inverted wingers, but, as above, why would they play with a 'striker/poacher' instead of a CF who would be more suited to dealing with crowded penalty areas?

    7) - Why play with inverted wingers if you DONT have the right FULL BACKS necessary to provide the MUCH NEEDED WIDTH??????? - SPACE HAS TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE!!!

    A FINAL OBSERVATION: - -

AVB (and now Sherwood) have been very unlucky with injuries, especially to the back 4,.

BUT,. If the balance of the squad was better, without the overloading of similar attacking players, (that are'nt really high enough quality wingers or No 10's) and the right amount of and type of defenders, this may have been eased..

Why play such strong teams in the Europa League group stages???

Honestly, the tournament is a complete joke!!!

In my opinion, I would be MORE THAN HAPPY to attend group stage games, knowing I would be watching OUR YOUTH and I would delight in it!! - If we get through, make the decision on if you want to commit to it then,..

THERE IS NO REWARD IN WINNING IT!!!!!

(Winner should be in next year's CL & CL failures should NOT be dropped into it!!)

We have a squad brimming with talent, but the overall balance of the squad is an absolute mess!!!!!! -

I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. - THE SPURS FANS, AS WELL AS THE PLAYING & NON-PLAYING STAFF DESERVE MORE FROM THE JOKE OF MANAGEMENT WE HAVE!!!!

Anon. I saw you post this after another article and I agreed there and still agree. But why not Klopp? Perhaps he's up for a challenge? The playing problems are as you say. The laughable thing is if you can see it, I can see it, everyone else who's posted an article or commented on an article can see it...why can't the Manager and the Management see it? (No sorry it's actually not funny). As you say we have the squad and the talent - we even have the possibility of a re-invigorated Ade as well! Your points on the Europa League are right too, other than the silverware, there is no reward of a CL place. It's a meaningless competition that only adds more games to an already choked season. But then its all about money and not about the fans or the glory of the game.
