Tim Sherwood is now our permanent manager and it appears he favours the 4-4-2. As much as I love the attacking style, I hate sacrificing a midfielder for a striker. The majority of players on the roster were brought in for AVB’s 4-2-3-1 system and many don’t fit Sherwood’s system. Sherwood could be planning a fire sale and major reconstruction in January. There are fringe players on this roster that need to go and we need reinforcements that fit a 4-4-2 system. In addition, I won’t be surprised if a few players leave due to Sherwood’s hiring.

In my opinion, there are up to 10 players that could be on their way out. Some of these players are underperforming, some will be casualties of the new system, and some will just want out.
The most likely to leave in January are Kyle Naughton, Gomes, and Defoe. I think it is almost certain these 3 players will be gone. Gomes is looking for playing time and he won’t get it at WHL. Naughton is just a defensive liability and too inconsistent. Defoe’s play has dropped off and he seems uninterested. Sherwood favours Adebayor over Defoe so I think Defoe will make his move to the MLS in January.
The midfield has become crowded under Sherwood. AVB had the midfield roster packed due to his 4-2-3-1 formation and now there are less spots. There is no way we are keeping all these guys. Eriksen is our best attacker. Sandro is our best defensive midfielder. Paulinho is a solid player. Bentaleb appears to be very high on Sherwood’s list. That leaves Dembele, Holtby, and Capoue. Based on the last two matches, I think Capoue is a definite departing because he will be looking for consistent playing time heading into the world cup and won’t get it with Sandro and others in front of him. Dembele is getting lots of attention from Serie A clubs and if the money is right, I think he is gone. Although many Spurs fans love Holtby, I have been slightly disappointed with his play and I struggle to see where he fits in the line-up. I love his passion and commitment, but he has been very inconsistent. Once Sandro is healthy Holtby’s playing opportunities will be increasingly limited. I’m not sure he will want to stay and I’m not sure Sherwood will keep him if a good offer comes in.
The moves he makes with the wingers will be as interesting as the midfield moves. I am confident that Lennon and Townsend are staying, which leaves Sigurdsson, Chadli, and Lamela. I think the moves with the wingers come down to economics. If good offers come in for any of these three, I think Sherwood will move those players. I would personally hang on to Lamela due to his potential. It is just too early to give up on him with 3 league starts and a few Europa starts. Sigurdsson is a potential transfer despite starting the last few matches. Sigurdsson lacks pace to pressure the defence in 4-4-2 and he is too inconsistent playing in the middle. Chadli has the pace and athleticism but he has failed to impress. He is fighting for a starting spot with Belgium and will want consistent first team action, so I won’t be surprised if he asks for a transfer.
Kaboul is the most likely of the CB’s to be on the move. Although I would love to see Dawson gone, I would guess that he has very little transfer value as well as limited demand. Kaboul has struggled to maintain fitness and I’m just not sure he will ever get back to form. There are Serie A clubs showing interest in Kaboul so Levy may need to sell him while he has value.

As far as reinforcements, the priorities are LB, ST, and CB.
Our highest priority is LB, regardless of formation and system. Danny Rose has far exceeded my expectations and is playing great! However, durability is an issue and it is unrealistic to count on him every match which leads to cover issues. We need cover here in the worst way because we cannot continue to use Vertonghen as LB cover. I truly think Sherwood will recall BAE which is the easiest and cheapest option. My top two LB candidates would be Pereira and Criscito.
Our second priority is Strikers! Assuming Defoe is gone, we will need at least 1 quality striker. I would like to see a proven goal scorer from another Premier League team brought in like Dzeko , Chicharito, or even Berbatov. I know there are rumors of Vucinic coming in a swap deal with Lamela. I think he would be a good acquisition but I still prefer Dzeko or Chicharito.
CB’s are a big concern! Sherwood’s wide-open, attacking 4-4-2 puts even more pressure on the CB’s than AVB’s high line tactics. Our current CB’s are just not good enough to handle constant pressure. Dawson is struggling, Kaboul is never fit, Vertonghen is solid when healthy, and Chiriches has been inconsistent. We need an injection of youth, pace, and quality quickly. Schar from Basel, Zouma of St. Etienne, Mangala, and Benatia of Roma would be high on my list.
I know we brought in numerous players in the summer. Unfortunately, some of the new players have not met expectations. Others just don’t fit Sherwood’s system. We need reinforcements in the right areas and the underperformers must go. I don’t think Sherwood is the long-term solution for THFC but we all want him to be successful. It will be tough and expensive reconstructing this roster in January, but it can be done. If Sherwood has any chance of being successful, Levy and Baldini must get him the players he wants and needs. If not, I will be writing another article in the summer describing the fire sale of another manager!

Dream on.
ReplyDeleteNaughton will stay. He played well yesterday as a RB. He is a RB after all. Sherwood praised him as well. He's not going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteCompletely unrealistic
ReplyDelete"Schar from Basel, Zouma of St. Etienne, Mangala, and Benatia of Roma would be high on my list."
ReplyDeleteRubbish!!
The last thing we want is loads more foreign players who could take half a season, or more, to adjust to the EPL.
c'mon u spurs! well done tim sherwood 4-4-2 defend then 2-4-4 attack! players comfortble disciplined composed organised shape position formation ole'! goals glory happy days like to replace adebayor defoe class upgrades & top four+ nous guile yids! casuals ghost spooks.
ReplyDeletenaughton won't leave in January, gomes maybe, defoe will go to Toronto i think, capoue will stay, dembele is one of our best players so he won't leave, holtby wont leave in january, chadlii too , I'd sold sigurdsson but I think he will stay, lamela will certainly stay, kaboul will sign a new contract if he recovers from injuries.
ReplyDeleteYou're assuming that Sherwood and his 4-4-2 are here to stay beyond the end of the current season. My guess is Van Gaal comes in during the summer and Sherwood is gone (irrespective of how he does over the remainder of the season). I doubt Levy and Baldini will make wholesale changes in the roster before they figure out who the ultimate Manager is going to be and what their system and their assessment of the current roster is likely to be. Sounds like Van Gaal already delivered a dossier with his ideas for what Spurs should do with the current team. My guess is there might be a few very obvious moves like Gomes and Defoe and a few we bring in but beyond that not much in this transfer window. All the action will happen over the summer when a permanent manager (even if that is Sherwood which I really doubt) is decided upon.
ReplyDeleteLove it how you have managed to give percentage chances of players leaving. I am sure they are all very accurate- especially the 100% chance for Naughton. Like the idea tho
ReplyDeleteThere is a 100% chance the author of this article just pulled those numbers out his arse.
DeleteI think rather than youthful centre backs we could do with one or two older experienced ones to bring a bit of sense to the back line. Remember the impact that Gallas had? Or Naybet a few years ago - he couldn't run or speak English but was a big help for a season
ReplyDeleteIt would be stupid to sell Sigurdsson and Capoue. Gylfi has been playing out of his best position this season but still has scored 4 goals and has 3 assists in all competitions. Very underrated player. He can play midfield and as a inverted winger and is a goal threat. Same with Capoue he can play as a defensive midfielder and as a CB. Good to have players who can step in if there is an injury etc.
ReplyDeleteHoltby and Chadli i think is best if sold or loaned in January.
Let's take 3 points aginst Man Utd,
We need a proper left back(Shaw) and a solid and pacy central defender, Dawson is not a top premierleague defender. We need a top hot striker ie Diego Costa(Athletico Madrid).
ReplyDeleteOUT: Hotlby (exchage with Ross Barkley); Dofoe; Jake livermore; Chadli; unfortunatley Sandro as he is always injured; Gomes and Adebayor end of season we can't have someone sulking and moody all the time.
Oh dear. There will be very little change in Jan, we know that. Yes JD may go assuming we can get a replacement. We will not get rid of any CB or FB, BAE will come back in. I am not a massive fan of Djembele but he will not be getting sold. Siggy I would sell and I can never understand why AVB refused 10 million from Reading last season. Capoue is a very good DM and he and Sandro must be kept and rotated. We need Lennon, Townsend, Lamella, Chadli, to cover the wings.. That leaves Erikson, Paulhinio, and Djembele to either play as the AM or one to play as number 10 when we dont't play 442, becasue playing 442 at City, Utd, Chelsea etc will be madness. We also have the option of playing three at the back with Rose and walker as wing backs then say Sandro, Djemeble, Paulhinio, Eriksen, Ade. etc so we need to keep the squad together. Also it would undermine Baldini were we to have a fire sale. Interim Tim will have very little say on who comes and goes.
ReplyDeleteYou're living in a fantasy world, mate..
ReplyDeleteDefoe is the only player that will leave in January permanently.. There's a slight possibility of Lamela and Holtby going out on loan but that's about it.
We couldn't pay for people to take Gomes off our hands...
Dembele 60% to be sold:):) Funny aint doing this article any justice. In this day and age a top team will need plenty of midfield options to say the least which will give the manager a healthy squad not suffering fatigue as the season goes. Nothing to do with system. We are playing Thursdays and Sunday. Sandro is injury prone and the closest you can get for Sandro is Capoue. Eriksen just came back from injury Holtby is always useful and lively. Gomes will probably go but Sherwood says if it was upto him he would never sell his best players therefore any top name will not be moving. Stop assuming things while you can read the managers own words. What I like about sherwood is his tranparency. Which is very refreshing.
ReplyDeleteGomes will leave, Naughton maybe, Siggy or Chadli maybe
ReplyDeleteNo way Dembele going, no way Capaoe leaving either. I would be amazed if Lamela sent on loan as think he is getting into it. Defoe will stay if no replacement found and to get a player of defoe's ability in January on the cheap is unlikely.
I don;t see mcuh in way in way of INS in January. BAE to return perhaps. Leave Carrol at QPR for season but bring him back next season and loose Siggy.
I hope you are right on Gomes, Naughton, and Defoe. If anything, our LB help will be BAE unfortunately…..don't think Levy will be making many moves in January, but he did hire Sherwood so maybe he will surprise us again!
