Upstairs Downstairs

Article by Sean Walsh

December 2013 will definitely be a month Spurs fans will want to forget; a drubbing at home, a manager sacking without a plan and yet another defeat at home to West Ham, topped off by the fact that Tottenham Hotspur are heading into a period of pointlessness.

I hate to say it, but it looks like we won’t be qualifying for the Champions League yet again. Let’s face it we’re not as good as the teams around us at the moment and judging by how the season’s going we may not be for a while. That’s not what’s irked us fans though- it’s that man upstairs.

Okay yes, Daniel Levy has overseen a pretty good evolution at Tottenham, but it wasn’t one that has gone as smoothly as it could be. A succession of failed managers has seen us trudge to the heights we want need to scale. We’re Tottenham Hotspur, one of the most successful and historic clubs in English football, and using us Daniel Levy has earned a rather fruitless reputation. And the past month has seen him and ENIC come under fire and not for the first time.

It’s been going on for a while as well. I went to my first game when I was 8 in 2006 simply because my dad had to scrimp and save for months to get tickets. This hasn’t changed since either. I can barely make it to one game a season now. What are we, customers or supporters?

I doubt many managers will want the hot seat at White Hart Lane as long as Levy’s in charge. Graham, Hoddle, Pleat, Santini, Jol, Ramos, Redknapp and now Vilas-Boas- the managers who have been axed by Levy and all in just over a decade. For a man who has said he thinks long term he’s certainly going against his own word there.

Levy’s a man who would argue over the cost of a pint at his local pub and this rather annoying trait is restricting the progress of Tottenham Hotspur. Last season I believe we missed out on one of the most important signings we could’ve ever made in Joao Moutinho. You may not think much of one transfer, but hear me out. Since Modric left we’ve desperately missed a deep lying playmaker and Moutinho was just the man to fill that hole. Not only that but a sitting playmaker was essential to how Andre wanted his teams to play; don’t forget, he bid £40million for Modric at Chelsea and he evidently paid the price for not bringing in a man to play that role. AVB knew Moutinho well and was willing to fly back and forth from his native Portugal on deadline day to see through the deal. Everything was set for Moutinho to join Spurs, except the transfer fee. A £22million fee was agreed but FC Porto wanted extra clauses and add-ons- Levy wouldn’t budge. “Take the £22million or we’ll head elsewhere”, he told them. And here we are, just under a year and a half later and Moutinho is a key man in an aspiring Monaco team (who, for the record beat us 5-2). We’ve lacked a man with a killer pass ever since Modric waltzed off to Real Madrid and if we managed to sign Moutinho, I guarantee you we’d have finished in the top 4.

But the point is, we didn’t.

In my opinion, the writing was on the wall when he tried uprooting us to Stratford. A money motivated move and one that no self-respecting Spurs fan was behind. Since then it’s been clear we’re just the servants to Daniel Levy and ENIC. And it’s led us to this.

When AVB was sacked, it would be sane enough to believe Levy had a replacement in mind, right? Well…

Here we are, under Sherwood floating in an abyss of futility for the time being. We have some top quality players at this club who could secure a move to regular Champions League sides whenever they like- why would they hang around wasting their careers at a club who will be going through this kind of period?

That’s the last straw. We’re going backwards. Barring some miracle our best players will attract interest from bigger, more ambitious clubs and will probably leave. Lloris, Vertonghen, Paulinho, Soldado, Lamela, Dembele, Eriksen, Sandro- gone. If the world was fair it would be ENIC and Levy making that movement instead.

I’m sorry for the frighteners there, but that’s the truth. Like I said, what are we, customers or supporters? It’s gone far enough.

^Mate, Levy had every intention of moving to Stratford, he appealed over the decision and made artists conceptions, it's not about players gelling, it's about the system and tactics (or lack of them), the guy never said he wasn't behind the team, no need to be so rude, we're all behind the team, we're not happy how it's run, open YOUR eyes and realise the guy's talking sense, not you.
