Article by Dino Gallina
Being a new “member” of the writing team at e-Spurs, I have had the pleasure of reading many articles in regards to the pros and cons of the season to date. Without harping on too much in regards to Saturdays game v “Woolwich Town”, I’m more concerned at the selection of the team that faced the enemy.

Sure Sherwood was to blame for leaving Capoue on the bench, why? I don’t know or understand. Bentalab has the showings of being a decent player one day and if Sherwood is going out to prove a point by bringing young players with an “alright” CV, he best think again or he may be the second manager to be shown the door. He would be best to explain why Bentalab was preferred to Capoue? Our only DM currently fit. Did Sherwood really want to win the game or was he hoping to win the game?
Also, under Redknapp we had this absurd situation where he kept playing our most creative midfielder, Luka Modric, on the left wing? I don’t understand. Same principal with Eriksen to date, on the left wing - why? Irrespective of the majority of doom-dayers opinion, Lamela has the goods, talent and ability to eventually surpass even Gareth Bale, play him on the wing, give him a decent run, not 5 mins here and there. Eriksen is a true no 10, but again we have a manager who has come in, decided to go all out and play two strikers and we’ve been caught short. For all the good Adebayor has been of late, time will tell if he truly has a heart to play for Spurs. Soldado, like Lamela will be a different proposition next season. These are talented, world class players and patience is required. I read Lamela’s father insists his son wants to return to the safe haven of Serie A, at the end of the day Erik Lamela and his associates could have turned the club down and stayed with Roma, but chose not to.
In a perfect world Tottenham’s starting 11 is simple and again, like all the readers, this is my observation only –
GK - Lloris
RB - Walker
CB - Vertonghen / Chiriches
LB - Rose (for now)
MF - Lennon / Paulinho (Sandro / Capoue) / Dembele / Townsend
CM- Eriksen
CF- Soldado (Adebayor)
You would incorporate the midfield in a diamond shape, with Lennon and Townsend providing the width for Soldado. Not only will Lennon and Townsend provide the attacking width required, they have proven in the past to work their socks off defensively as well. I struggle looking at the current squad whether players like Rose, Kaboul (sorry as I am a fan, but he is too injury prone), Holtby, Naughton, Defoe (Canada here I come!), Dawson (too slow), Chadli (square peg in a round hole), Sigurosson, Fryers and Kane will ever lift Tottenham to the levels required to compete in the CL on consistent basis. To be bluntly honest Lennon and Adebayor are flirting on the perimeters of the names mentioned above due mainly to inconsistencies on the pitch.
In reality Spurs require another class striker, forget the talk about Long and others, two more defenders, a LB and CH, and another creative midfielder of sorts but first things first, appoint Van Gaal as manager, let HIM, not Levy or Baldini select the players required to achieve our goals...........

I agree with alot of what you've said, but team wise you contradict yourself, give Lamela a decent run, but you then select Townsend, I'd like Tim Sherwood to accept we don't have a decent LB so go with 3 Walker/Vertongen/Chiriches then play a 5 man midfield, Lennon/Paulino/Sandro/Dembele/Lamela (alternates, Holtby/Capoue/Townsend/Sigursson)
ReplyDeletethen Eriksen as No 10 with Soldado (Adebayor)
I agree with the player selection but the formation wont work its AVB all over again!! stick to 4,4,2 with one or two world class additions rotate the squad and we should start to win things!!
