The Great Lamela Divide

Never have I known a player to divide fan opinion the way Erik Lamela does. Since joining Spurs two years ago, the Argentine has come in for increasing levels of disapproval from fans, culminating in the cacophony of criticism that came his way following a forgettable 25-minute cameo against Stoke on Saturday.

Article by Atour Toma

Common analysis of Lamela centres on the same negative appraisals – “he’s too lightweight”, “doesn’t score enough”, “gives the ball away too easily”, etc. – and they all seem perfectly valid.

Supporters of Lamela point to the fact he produced the highest number of assists than any other Spurs player last season. That coupled with his desire to tackle back and help out his defence is a plus point in his favour.

In any case, any player that is a regular part of the Argentina national side – currently ranked #1 in the world – is certainly no slouch.

The optimist in me continues to live in hope that Lamela is on the verge of exploding on the Premier League stage and becoming the player for Spurs that we all dream he can be.

However this campaign is a watershed one. Having flattered to deceive under three different managers, including current head coach Mauricio Pochettino, this season represents one final chance for Lamela to show us what he can do, and justify the good will of the Club and the majority of fans.

Many talk of him needing time to acclimatise to the rigours of the Premier League, but after
two years at the club you would imagine if he hasn’t settled by now, he probably never will. Similar players such as Alexis Sanchez and Jefferson Montero have moved to England during that time and have swiftly overcome this problem.

It’s also fair to say that he came back to pre-season late after the Copa America and may not be quite where he should be fitness-wise yet. However Sanchez and Montero both played in the Copa America, as well as the likes of Philippe Coutinho.

Looking beyond his current fitness levels, the question in my mind simply comes down to this – from a footballing perspective, if Lamela was no longer at the Club, would he be missed? The answer, at least in my mind, is NO.

We currently have at least three midfielders in Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele that are more deserving of a slot in the starting XI than Lamela.

His place on the bench is equally questionable. Rarely has he come on as a substitute and changed a game. With a whole fresh batch of hungry, young attacking midfielders (i.e. Alex Pritchard, Dele Alli) now on the fringes of the starting XI, it could be argued that they represent a better option than the, thus far, underwhelming and disappointing Lamela.

While he has the occasional fancy goal or killer pass in his locker, it’s hard to see the club persevering much longer with his enigmatic talents, especially bearing in mind the increased competition in the side these days.

As a player there must come a time when you realise that time is running out and it’s just not meant to be. In a summer where the Club has cut their losses and sold a lot of under-performing players, Lamela’s importance to this side is decreasing by the day.

If a club came in for him with a serious bid between now and September, I imagine Pochettino would be tempted to snap their hand off for a player that continues to edge closer and closer to the periphery of the Spurs squad.

  2. He is perfect for matches where he will have time and space on the ball. Unfortunately that will never happen in the EPL. He is best suited for Serie A or La Liga.

The ladyboy must be given away asap. Baldini tucked Levy up with Lamela. The reason he keeps getting game time is because nobody can believe how wrong Spurs were to buy the mug in the first place. There is a belief that Lamela simply has to be better than he looks because of the large fee paid.

Lamela is pony and he ain't getting any better ever.

Firstly, Lamela hasn't spent two seasons at the club as the first was virtually all spent on the sidelines. He has had one season of regular football, and arguably as a first season it was better than Chadlis whereby almost all of the same morons calling for Lamelas head now were calling for Chadlis this time roughly 12 months ago.

Secondly, Spurs only have Lamela and Eriksen with any intelligent creative spark about them. If we sell Lamela and lose Eriksen to injury then it's hello boring football.

Thirdly Lamela is only 23 and is still improving physically, he was much more lightweight when he first arrived. As he improves further physically he will continue to improve his football with it.

Im so glad the idiots don't make the calls...

Thank you, for once someone gives me hope that there are spurs fans out there with a shred of intelligence. He was injured pretty much for the whole of his first season and Tim even said he wouldn't be fit enough to participate for the rest of the season. His second season although rash and unpolished at times, he showed moments of brilliance and a creative spark, something that the team doesn't have an abundance of. I am hoping for him to take off this season as I'm sure everyone is but he's 23 and still developing and adapting.. to suggest he's shit and should be sold at whatever price is just beyond belief. Ignore the price tag and have some patience

Two years on and it ain't looking good. We watch a boy like Memphis at United, and he hits the ground running ..while Lamela, for all the world, looks like a kid trying to be Messi and Ronaldo in a park kickabout. He has talent, sure, but he seems to have little strength and just can't adjust to the pace and movement of the EPL, and he's unlikely to anytime soon. What is with us and bad expensive buys?
We get Postiga while Utd get Ronaldo ..we get Rebrov while Chelsea get Shevchenko ..we get Lamela and Soldado while, anyway, you get the picture. Also, a lot of players don't seem to fit at Spurs, and yet do well elsewhere. It's happened too often for it be a coincidence ..and I look at the past 3 years (even in Bale's wonderful last season) and pine for how we played in most of Redknapp's last season (until his eyes left our focus and settled on an England job that never was). That was the last time we played attractive and penetrative football, and I fear that never replacing Modric (moreso than Bale) is costing us now.

lamela doesn,t have the pace to ever be any good in the EPL, i met him after the game on saturday, and he comes accross as a really nice person, and was obviously down after what happened (we were 2-0 up when he came on) at the same time hes on 70k aweek and cost 30million 2 seasons and nothing, think levy should cut his losses
