Confidence Is High After Continuing The Unbeaten Streak

Spurs put in a good performance against Arsenal in the 1-1 draw at Emirates Stadium. Spurs controlled large parts of the game and took a worthy point in a game we could well have won. We shouldn’t view the result as two points dropped.

The greater features to take from the game are:

The continuance of this unbeaten run – losing a games leaves an empty feeling and chips away at morale. If a team doesn’t finish a game off, they will always be in a position to lose a lead and that’s what we were reminded of on Sunday.

The attitude and belief shown by the players - for the remaining fixtures the mind-set of the players is all important.

Sunday’s performance showed that the players believe in what they’re doing and aren’t fazed by playing Arsenal on their own turf. We can confidently say that this Spurs team fears no one. As young as the team, they are kicking-off games believing they have what it takes to beat even the best English sides. That hasn’t always been the case.

The team showing did much to inspire confidence in the belief that Spurs can mount a credible top-4 challenge this season. As well as appearing tough to beat, the team is looking ever more settled and cohesive. These are all positive points.

For the first time in a long while Spurs have what can be considered a solid defence. Two competent centre-backs supported by improving full-backs (most notably Kyle Walker) and complemented by a world-class GK. This defence is something to be grateful for if you’re familiar with defences of seasons gone by. They might not score goals but they keep us in games. They shouldn’t be taken for granted. Kyle Walker put in an assured performance to halt most Arsenal advances down our defensive right-side. Eric Dier is proving to be decent cover for that defence and looks to be forming a tight partnership alongside Dele Alli. Even Lamela is upping his performances. All in all, the Spurs midfield looks decent and is laden with talent.

The midfield looked like they’ve played together for more than they have done. Their passing, hunting and movement looked good. They kept the ball and their discipline had the famed Arsenal midfield chasing after the ball for a lot of the game.

That said, it will be helpful to have Son back to full fitness as he provides a professionalism, ambidextrous skill and creative vision that we would like to see on the pitch.

Eriksen is a star. No need to mince words. That boy has a creative flair and technical ability most teams would cherish. His passing and link play with Kane is superb. The more minutes those two play together, the more chance we have of achieving our goals this season.

It’s all going fairly well so far but we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that we have one recognised centre-forward, a very good one but still only one. A lay-off for him and the whole dynamic of the team changes. N’Jie and Son may be promising forwards in their own rights but there is only one Harry Kane and there is no like-for-like replacement. That is something that needs to be addressed in January if this team is to really pose a threat to the establish order in the Premier League. His goals last season were vital and they will prove the same this season. If we lose his attacking threat for even one game, we will feel it. He leads the line well, looks goal hungry and inspires belief among his team-mates. We need him playing in as many matches as possible. If he can keep fit until January and Levy can bring in another accomplished forward, the sky is the limit. COYS!
