Birthdays
1980 - Ledley King, defender 1999-2012, born
Now recognised by most Spurs fans as one of the finest defenders of his generation, Ledley spent his entire career playing with the club, playing 321 competitive matches for Spurs from 1999 to 2012. Having come through the Club's Academy ranks, Ledley made his senior debut as an 18-year-old, coming on as a substitute during a 3-2 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in May 1999. Although injury cut short a fine career, he did have the honour of leading us out for our first-ever Champions League match at the Lane - the second leg of the play-off against Young Boys in August 2010.
1963 - Bobby Mimms, goalkeeper 1988-1991, born.
Bobby made 37 appearences for Tottenham, having initially joined the club in 1988 from Everton, following the retirement of Ray Clemence. Mimms played for no fewer than 14 clubs during a varied career which also saw him have good spells at both Everton and Blackburn. Happy Birthday!
Debuts
Hopkins joined Tottenham Hotspur aged just 15 after reportedly having been spotted playing for his local boy's club. He was taken on as an apprentice after just one trial. The left back went on to win a League and FA Cup double in 1961. In 1959, he suffered a serious injury following a collision with Ian St John, smashing his nose and upper jaw, an injury which would keep him out of football for two years.
Mel Hopkins made 219 appearences for Spurs in total, before leaving for the South coast and Brighton and Hove Albion in October 1964 for a transfer fee of £8,000.
