What's the Media's Problem with Spurs?

Article by E-Spurs Writer Chris Mecoy

Hello again Spurs fans.

I write these articles to incite conversation and thoughts amongst Spurs fans, and maybe even a little controversy, but today I feel I must write about something that will surely unite every Tottenham man or woman walking the face of the Earth.

Why have the media taken such an apparent dislike to us? Let's start at the beginning, shall we? Marca. This Madrid-owned shambles of a sports newspaper. Not long ago, the News of the World stopped printing because of it's disgraceful behaviour regarding the phone tapping scandals. The Sun or Mirror will always have to apologise if they get a story incorrect, and yet Marca are able to get away with absolute murder and nothing seems to happen to them.

The fabricated stories and made up quotes are enough to wind anyone up, but I challenge you to find any Yid or Yidette who wasn't irate at the recent proof that this 'newspaper' actually attributed the same quotes to Gareth Bale, word for word, that they attributed to Luka Modric a year ago. Then they have the gall to publish a mocked up picture of Bale in a Real Madrid shirt on their front page!

Also, Marca will copy and paste EVERY news report, ITK rumour or Blog page, stick it in their rag and class it as news. They don't even correct the spelling mistakes! Even writing this article is rubbing me up the wrong way. Now, the only saving grace for me was that the British press wouldn't really rise to the bait. In fact, they would only report on what Marca was saying, but they would also make sure the reader or viewer are aware Marca are not known for their truth-telling abilities.

Unfortunately, now our infamous media are getting in on the act, with their own nonsense. Apparently, Gareth Bale getting off the plane after a long flight without a huge grin on his face is conclusive proof that he really isn't happy at White Hart Lane and wants to leave. The BBC have even gone one better and claim that Bale has actually asked to speak to Madrid. Any proof? Any quotes from the player himself? Of course not.

This begs a couple of questions. Let's face it, it's not even about the player staying or leaving anymore, is it? Most Spurs fans would love to see him stay, yet most would probably accept the 51 million plus Coentrao and Di Maria deal being touted in the oh-so informed media, wouldn't they?

The advice I'm following, and I urge you to do the same, is take each news report with a pinch of salt. Just wait until Tottenham release a statement of their own. I'll finish off by repeating the sentiments of many a lilywhite. Bale is the face of BT Sport's Premiership coverage and is also on the cover of FIFA 14 in a Spurs shirt. Surely both companies would have demanded assurances that the Welsh Jesus would stay. The same assurances that were apparently given to Paulinho to get him to sign. Add to that the fact that Gareth has just started a family and may be unwilling to uproot to Spain at this stage and I think you see a clearer picture of the situation.

The whole thing smacks of desperation by the Spanish and British media to provide something newsworthy. While I appreciate just how infuriating this constant speculation is, I truly hope that every Spurs fan can look beyond this and look forward to what could be a very promising season. As for Real Madrid, it's time to put up or shut up.

Rant over.

COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Paranoia. They behave like that whenever they like, not just when Spurs are on the receiving end. In a similar way the TV commentary is always dreadfully biased when Spurs are playing but perfectly OK the rest of the time.

As much as I agree with you and hope Bale does in fact stay for one more season....its does apprear more and more likely that he may well be off. The figres being bashed around though??? im not so sure. My other concern, should he go is can Spurs attract world class players this year without L football? and before anyone says it, yes I know we have signed Soldano and Paulinho....but, with the RM player that are being talked about in part exchange + cash, it could be a good deal and form the basis of a very very good team, capable of pushing for dare I say the top 3 and compete for the league?

Bale is going to give up a Family like Club who love him for dirty soul less madrid who want him as back up in case Ronaldo doesn't sign. I heard the ex unREAListic Madrid President say this yesterday about Ronaldo. Get all the money first if he has to go, before they go bankrupt and are found guilty for illegal state loans.

I don't think it is a dislike of spurs but the media frenzy has astounded me. Firstly I don't believe Bale actually desperately wants to go; RM have spread rumours to force Bale to hand in a transfer request. WHICH HE HASN'T DONE.
Secondly some of the thick (ex footballer and talk sport) pundits seem desperate for him to go to fur fill his destiny as the second coming. laughable but this is what they sounds like.

  7. It's great to read someone with a clear head on the matter, and it's worrying how many people are making up so much crap. I have little faith in the media as it is, but what gets me is the amount of Spurs Blogs that are believing and speculating about this complete nonsense... Lets talk about the great team we're gonna have for the upcoming season!

Agreement in everything you said chris, news columns these days are just cheapshot comments or paste n copy ,I read your comments weekly and always looking forwards to your next one it makes a refreshing change to see a column with the reporters own views if people agree or not it makes good conversation ..... keep up the good work e-spurs...

Sensationalism sells newspapers. Teal Madrid buying Bale for £85M is sensational. In fact, I should help here. I have it on good authority that in order to ensure that Madrid get their man, they're going to offer €500M and their whole first team (with the exception of Ronaldo). (it was a very vivid dream - seemed almost real)

As a spurs fan of 34 years, I have seen many great players at spurs, gazza, Lineker, klinsmann, etc etc... But have never witnesed such a saga as this, Bale has a chance at this point to become a spurs legend, statues in his image outside the stadium amongst other things or can move to real Madrid. If it worked out for him over there he could become one of the many great players to have moved for there dream pay packet or if it doesn't he could end up doing an Owen he did well didn't he? Or even worse a modric!
Well whatever happens believe me young spurs fans, TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS are bigger than ANY player. If he goes a new hero shall rise. Trust me.

so today i read from the usual ITK (imaginary twoddle krap) sites, no names mentioned but you know the same ones that confirmed benteke had signed? anyway ive read bales odds on staying slashed, ive read there is no offer from madrid, that bale cant walk away from his BT deal, that his parents & agent met with spurs to discuss his new contract... I also read 20 more stories saying he was going. at this point i wish he'd go so we cab reinvest quick smart. this bale thing is like a toothache, painful and constantly there, just pull the tooth out Levy and be done with it.

  12. anonymous6:13 pm

ps.. caulker leaving? what on earth is that about? did Levy stick in a buy back clause or something? it's totally baffling

Chris hi, even over on vital spurs we have all been spitting feathers as to the length Marca the Real Madrid fanzine mag go to unsettle players, not just Gareth and spurs, but other's before, this all started with Zidane and his admiration towards Gareth, the british press have printed what marca wrote and then vise versa, i make long flights from time to time, when i get off the plane, i just want to get to my hotel, not walk off "Grinning like a Cheshire Cat" If Levy decides to sell, so be it. But to date they bid, we keep saying his not for sale, they still owe us money for Modric, some partnership this has turned to be.

  17. I am amazed that a club that is allegedly bailed out by the Spanish banks and government can even contemplate a bid of such magnitude, or bids of such magnitude if we look at their history! In a country where the economy would have appeared to have stalled, a bid like this for a mere football player would seem totally obscene, even more obscene than the wages that some of the players earn.
More pertinently, it would seem from some of the ITKs that no bid has been made, so much of that which has been said is totally fabricated and clearly designed with the intention of trying to turn GBs head. I love Gareth Bale as a player and just like I got over the losses of Greaves, Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza, Ardiles, Jurgen, Ginola, Berbatov and Modric, I would get over GB were he to go, but in this instance, my gut instinct is saying he will stay!
On a further point, I find it inconceivable that they will escape punishment for this campaign as to the best of my knowledge they do not have permission from the club to speak with him.
    Outrageous is my final comment.

I think you've hit it on the nail Chris. To be quite honest, the team that we're building are without a doubt, VERY STRONG contenders of not only a CL spot, but we could even have a chance at the Prem next year. If Bale left right now, it would be all about the money. If he stayed, he would be part of a team that will achieve many things in seasons to come. Many of you will disagree, but leaving for the Bernabeu could also be Bale's downfall. If Ronaldo stays then Gareth will always be No.2. Ronaldo will not give him that chance to shine, as all Spurs fans previously witnessed when Luka Modric was the star of WHL. It's only when Modric left that Bale shined like never before. What my point is that there is no reason for Bale to leave at this point in time, and we all know what happens when our best players go to a Bigger team.

So glad this article was written! I thought I was the only one thinking what you have wrote and I that was just paranoid! And two of the most biased companies come to mind TALKSPORT and SKY! It seems to me they like there elite clubs (the money big boys)in place, and the back handers they receive for promoting them. And has anyone noticed how many ex gooner players have there say about us on radio and tv. Mr Merson and his little side kick Charlie 'mug' Nicolas Two out of four panellist's ex Arsenal and how we would finish tenth without good old Harry (Merson)and how AVB will not last, etc etc etc etc! Well bollocks to the lot of them! 1882 Spurs the pioneers of a lot of great things! Do your research!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous6:38 pm

It gets so frustrating when the so called pundits/experts just jump on the bandwagon. I think I'm quite pragmatic, really want him to stay at least another season if for no other reason than to see if AVB's project will work, of which he's an important cog. I'm however prepared for him to go, as long as we get Lamela. Yet pundits or w**k**s who were calling for him to stay another season a couple months ago are now saying he should go because Real are prepared to break the world record again. I would love him to stay just to hear them backtrack spectacularly. If he is hot property now, then he'll be hot property next year, and if Real dont want him then there'll be others who do. Money isn't everything, but I feel like I'm a minority with this sentiment.

I agree about J Redknapp !! He seems to have it in for Spurs and doesnt have a nice word to say about us (Fair play his dad was treated badly by the club but still):-@

Anyway, EVERY club in world football are selling clubs, not just Spurs !!

United sold Ronaldo, Barcelona sold Figo and even the so called MIGHTY Real sell players so sod off Redknapp, players move on and as long as a profit is made who cares !!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous6:45 pm

yes the media are always bagging spurs, for years now but do we care? we all know we love spurs cos they always try to play tasty football, none of this 2 banks of 4 liverpool success tactic crap. Tottenham consistently are the most exciting team to watch playing ball, win or lose... that's why we love them. good bye good luck good night and good riddance to bale... maybe next season we will be a team again and not just a single player

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nicely put Chris.
With the thousands of sport related websites & blogs on the net, the numerous radio stations + the number of daily rags & mags, they have to print 'new' and 'exclusive' stories every single day and unfortunately this desperation for an interesting story has now become a free-for-all of total drivel during every transfer window. The combination of said desperation for new stories, along with the old pros who stick in their two pennies worth and the agents who plant trollop stories to push through deals, we are all suckers for following it every step of the way. However, we all secretly love it otherwise we wouldn't follow it all so closely.

I don't believe the media dislikes Spurs, i just think its our turn this year as Bale is the top boy at the moment. Next summer it will be someone else at another club.

Whether he goes or not who knows but i do know there is no smoke without fire and if he wasn't going both him and the club would have announced his new contract by now. £90m+ is just too much to turn down and if we can include Morata in the deal then as much as it will hurt to see him go, its a deal we simply have to do. By doing that and signing a couple more (Lamela + a LB + another CB) then we'll be a lot stronger this year.

We're Spurs. Its always interesting. That's why we love 'em.

Easily the best peace of journalism I've read in ages.
I couldn't agree more. It's no surprise to see the hack journalists at Marca doing anything they can to promote what they see as the best interests of RM. it's not even surprising to read the crap posted by the tabloids, and the smug idiots over at talksport. But I'd have thought the BBC and Sky would have shown a little more restraint. Is inserting the phrase "Sky Sports understands" in front of whatever they then report, a way of distancing them from the story, should it prove to be in error?
Good point about the promise made to Paulinho. That's seems to have slipped people's memory. Also " Real Madrid are in talks with Tottenham about the sale of Bale" Really??.
Levy's slapping on the sun cream in Florida, so who are they dealing with?.
I've posted before, Real Madrid should be reported for their illegal tapping!

who cares if bale goes, I'll have 12million to re-spend on my fantasy team :-) how much you reckon soldado will cost (in fantasy) i reckon 10 mil... btw, the reason i think this thread should switch to fantasy football talk is it already is. the media are printing pure fantasy. i click on a mirror article stating the sun has quoted something from marca and so on... its total fantasy.

  29. Bang on mate, the media seem to be acting as players agents now....hope they are getting a good percentage of any deal. Funniest thing ive read so far is the barber in watford, according to him Bale's only hit form since he started cutting hair. If thats the case im paying him a visit and dusting off my boots.....my dream of playing for England may come true!!! Until official statements are issued from The Lane im not reading to much into the so called press. This is the best blog ive seen regarding RM & Bale, well thought out and well written.

I have always loved Spurs, and I always will. Real Madrid use to be my second favorite team, but then growing up in the fifties they were in all probability most people's favourite second team. I remember a May night in 1960 watching them like a line of white swans walk on to the Hampden Park pitch to give a display of football the like of which had never been seen before. That's when they were truly a great club and a even greater side. Del Sol, Ghento, Kopa, Puskas, Santamaria and the greatest of them all Di Stefano mesmerising a 135,000 plus crowd on a sultry Glasgow night, so much so that vast crowd were still in the stands thirty minutes after the final whistle, still shaking their heads in disbelief at what they had just witnessed on the pitch before them. Of course back in those days Madrid had class to go with their style, nowadays, although still the biggest name in world club soccer they are no longer royalty just a bunch of street urchins, how the mighty have fallen.

I love this article. I agree with everything you've said; the media just want to sell their stories, and as I've thought before, why would Bale be on the FIFA 14 cover if he were to leave.
I don't mind if he does leave in the near future, but I would love him to stay for one more season. The recent signings including Soldado are allowing us to really push for Top 4 (and maybe the title, though I won't get my hopes up). He isn't the sort of person to go for money, so I fancy him to stay. COYS!

Compared to a lot of the tosh I read on various sites from people who claim to be "informed" - this was a joy to read. Points made here that haven't been made anywhere else. and what is painfully obvious that you can see how much thought has gone into this. I generally only believe one source - the Tottenham website. Speculation, especially in this day and age is ridiculous. Even in the old days the adage was "I wont believe it till I see a picture of him with the shirt" Times of course change but this belief never has.
The BT Sport link was inspired, and you can see the logic of it. Brand new channel wants to make an impact. uses the leagues hottest player to do just that. If our hero left, how would that company be able to advertise in future without people having the impression of "yeah mate, if you say so.. but don't believe a word of it.

One other thing to consider. There was a lot of derision over the story saying Bale's mum and dad are apparently involved in contract negotiations. I actually like that, and here's why.

A friend of mine knows Gareths sister very well (that is genuine by the way) what comes across from talking to him is that they seem to be a very close, tight-knit family. So his parents are sitting in on the contract talks as they have their SON's best interests at heart, just as any parent would do for their kids. unlike an agent, who is only interested in getting a team to pay as much as possible, so that their cut of the deal goes up.. on that basis, I know who I would have at the table with Mr Levy. And it isn't Jonathan Barnett, who let's not forget was guilty of two misconduct charges over the Ashley Cole transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea., and whose actions have led everyone to paint Cole as nothing more than a money grabbing mercenary, which certainly wasnt the opinion fasn of any club had before that...

If Gareth does leave, then good luck to him. I've been a Spurs man all my life - but when you're the first for four generations not to be born in Tottenham its hard not to be. And as others have pointed out, great players have left before. I remember feeling distraught when Chrissy Waddle left. So what did we do. Mope? No. we went and bought some "promising" lol forward instead called Lineker.

The fact is simple. Tottenham Hotspur was the greatest club before any of these players were wearing the Lilywhite shirt, and will remain so long after they have traded it in for another..The king is dead, long live the King and all that....

Just remember when you click on a site for a story that site gets a hit ,so they get money. That's why there are so many of the same stories around. its all about money..papers are the same . its great we have bought some great players this year and think if bale does stay we will be title contenders. we all know that the last thing pundits want is for us to do well ex, ars, liver, mancs,so come on you spurs. to dare is to do..
