Diary of a Spursaholic – Tighter than a (add football related pun)

After the City game, I looked upon the match against Wigan, which gave every niggling suggestion that it would be a game we come unstuck in. It would be a game that we would throw away our hard fought effort against the blue side of Manchester, in which we gave ourselves a fighting chance to play Champions League football next season. This, in some ways, proved to be correct.

I like Wigan, I like Martinez, I like their quirkiness and ability to pull themselves out of the dirt every season, and they are going to do the same this season, no doubt about it. But this does not help the fact that every game is like a Cup Final to us; if it wasn’t before this weekend’s fixture, it certainly is after it. The results from this weekend have left the league table in a bit of a mix for us Spurs.

As you can see, there's not much between us, Chelsea and Arsenal, which becomes a lot more interesting when you take into consideration that we have a game in hand over Arsenal. If we win said game in hand, we would jump a point above the gooners to that magical fourth place position. Sounds easy enough, Right? … Wrong, that game in hand is against our dear friends whose prosperity last season denied us our CL place, Chelsea. Now, I don’t want to come across all ‘doom and gloom’, but let’s face it, our season is on a knife edge right now.

The tension has got me so riled up, that I physically and vocally cheered Van Persie’s goal on Sunday, knowing that Arsenal could not win that match at all costs. That is what our draw against Wigan has done to us Spurs fans. It has put us on edge, and now we have no back up, no alternative, but to succeed where we regularly fail. If we don’t, we would have managed to blow Champions League football two years running, and that is simply unacceptable by any Tottenham fans standards.

Let me ask a question, which is more important, making sure we don’t fail to reach our goals again, in the manner of last season, or having a desire to play in the Champions League next season. Which motivates you more? I honestly don’t know if I want us to succeed, or avoid failure, and there is a difference.

I am an optimistic fan, always have been, and always will be; Until that day where my cynicism creeps in. Until that day, I have optimistic hope about our chances. Who knows? Maybe it’s written in the stars; AVB needs to beat his previous employer to take Tottenham into The Promised Land.

Antony Moule.
