East-London Nomads Visit the Lane, New Deal for Daws, The Boss Bites Back and Injury Updates
When the Premier League schedule comes out before the season, many clubs look at them in different ways. Some clubs look for matches that can assure their top-flight status for another year, while others look for the long stretches that can become winning streaks due to matches against lower opposition. Many Spurs supporters looks for a few specific matches; Arsenal home and away, Chelsea at the Lane and our favourite punching bag, West Ham United, playing in their two cup finals. This has long been the running gag as the Hammers come into these matches with high hopes, yet are frequently disappointed when the final whistle blows. These wins always make me smile as along with Chelsea, a small section of West Ham’s supporters are nothing but anti-semitic, racist bums who take pleasure in mocking our supporters with such clever chants such as “Hitler’s coming to get you!”, “Can we stab you every week?” or the ever popular, “Hisssssssssss” to mimic the sound of the gas chambers during the Holocaust. Like I said, they are very clever.
Double Standard
The fact that some of that club’s supporters, participate in these chants towards Tottenham and their supporters, yet we are threatened with police action if we sing “Yid Army” is completely ludicrous. Kinda ironic that we, by singing Yid Army, are taking the sting out of a racist term yet when other supporters sing about anti-semitic themes, it is fine with the police and other authorities and gets no more than a passing glance. Absolutely shocking that we are again singled out for being supporters of a club who has Jewish roots and we are proud of it as this represents a part of our history, just like how we were singled out and attacked in Rome and Lyon last year, but we are to blame for singing a song that goes with our past. I just wish the authorities and other governing bodies would actually use their brains and look at it without any previous biases and see how we are using the term in a non-threatening way, in an attempt to diffuse a typically racist term, while others who use the term, as well as other choice words, in a derogatory manner as a way to harass and frighten our fans.
Daws Re-Ups
Once transfer marked and only a few signatures away from a move to then top-flight QPR, Michael Dawson has played himself into earning a contract extension for a further three years. Our club captain and heart-on-the-sleeve leader was ready to be sold but chose the harder route, to stay and fight for his place and convince his new manager that he has a role to play in the squad and now he is reaping the rewards. Yes, he has his flaws as he is slow and is often caught out due to his lack of pace and quickness but one cannot doubt his commitment to the cause and his will to fight for every ball near him, as if to say to the opposition, “As long as there is blood pumping through these veins, I will be fighting you tooth and nail”. A model professional and fully deserving of his place in the squad, Daws has formed a great partnership with Jan Vertonghen in front of Hugo Lloris which has seen us conceded only 2 goals in league play. Alas, he is not the long-term answer to our central defence as it is only a matter of time before Vlad Chiricheş or a finally healthy Younes Kaboul take his spot, but for the time being, he has made it very hard for AVB to drop him as his recent form has been great. Now if he can only score a goal or two against West Ham this weekend……
Andre Mad, Andre Smash!
Thanks to some biased media outlets, it seems that recent signing Vlad Chiricheş’s agent has popped off at the mouth, talking about how if Vlad does well at Spurs, he could play for Chelsea within two years as they have had an eye on him for a little while. Now, I understand that agents are hired to get the best deals for their clients but does one think that information such as this could do the player any good? Is this supposed to act as a bit of a threat to us, as if to say, we are good enough to be used a step on the ladder but don’t get too comfortable with him? Well, these questions all came up during a recent press conference and AVB was not too pleased with these developments. He did not shy away from these questions and reacted in the best way a manager can, by simply stating that the player should tell his agent to pipe down and that we are not a stepping stone for players. AVB also made a point in stating that we are a big club and the players who have been recruited are here to win us silverware, not collect paychecks. Simple and effective as it has basically put the player and his agent in their place while making the point that we will not be bullied or pressured into making moves due to agents or players. Yes, some may say that Bale was able to force his way out but in the end, we sold him on our terms, not Madrid’s who had to pay through the nose to fund our brand new squad. Vlad is a good player, one capable of becoming a regular for our side this season and next but these little stories will not help endear him, or his agent, to our fan base. Hopefully, our supporters will judge him solely based on his on-the-pitch performances, which have been impressive thus far, and not on quotes from people who may or may not be associated with the Romanian international.
Injury Updates
For a while it looked like we were really close to having the entire squad healthy with Kaboul starting Europa League matches, Azza training but not match fit, Danny Rose 50/50 for the West Ham match and Capoue to return after the international break, but now it looks like some are back in the physio’s room. Younes re-aggravated a muscle in his leg due to the poor conditions of the pitch in Moscow while both Danny Rose and Azza are definite doubts for tomorrow’s match against West Ham. It seems that when the international break concludes, we should have an almost full strength squad with the question mark over Kaboul, depending on how bad his muscle injury turns out to be. Slowly but surely, we are almost there.
