The Lamentable Lamela

Article by Gary Smith

AVB , now you are doing a good job and congratulations to you so far. However, you haven’t achieved anything earth – shattering and, as impressive as last season’s debut season with Spurs was and the promising start to this season, you haven’t overshadowed or emulated Harry so I would suggest you be careful of walking on eggshells.

I refer to your criticism of the home fans because, whilst probably justified, it could be a case of creating a rod for your own back. The Spurs’ fans have been , historically , very critical and expectations have always probably been higher than they should. This derives from the legacy of being the first team to achieve the double in the 20th Century , the only non-league winners of the FA Cup, the first British team to win a European trophy amongst other milestones.

Spurs are clearly a team that need to find their shape and fluidity as their poor goalscoring record thus far demonstrates. Hopefully, considering the available talent on paper, this will happen sooner rather than later. However, considering the enormous outlay over the summer it is hardly surprising that the fans are beginning to becoming frustrated by the lack of a final output. Soldado came with a great reputation but until he gets the service it is going to be difficult to assess his true quality. Playing with two wingers, Spurs should surely be creating more chances for the forwards.

Next and on to our record buy – Erik Lamela. I watched him against Sheriff in midweek and wondered whether he had actually been signed via a screening of Youtube. He seemed to have no control, little pace and absolutely no idea of those around him. I have subsequently read that AVB believes that he is only performing at 50 % of his potential. That would be a horrifying thought since he seemed to be playing like a man in a self induced coma. However, to end this negativity – in his defence ; he is only 21 ; he has a massive price tag and, hence, expectations, on his head ; he has been isolated in a foreign country without family ; he doesn’t know the language. A lot of reasons to give him a chance and I think AVB is dealing with this in the right way.

At the moment Spurs are reminding me of the Arsenal and Chelsea sides who ground out 1-0 wins. Not particularly pleasant but effective. I am looking forward to when the attacking elements of the team gel but so far there cannot really be too many complaints. We haven’t conceded a goal in Europe and are within 3 points of the top of the league, all without being at our best. Not a bad start to what could be a productive season.

In my last article I suggested the home game with Hull was a banker with which I was justifiably chided. For 80 minutes I was regretting my words. Hence, no predictions for the midweek Cup game with Hull!

I think in the grand scheme of things we have to remember just how much of an overhaul we have here in terms of squad players. It was always going to take a while, it's work in progress. All that being said, if we can keep well in touch with top place and get wins when not playing particularly great what exactly are we moaning for!?

It's a dead certainty that the team will gel, when it does we are only going to add to what we have at the moment. Sure I'm frustrated with the link between forwards and midfield but I'm positive it's only a matter of time. Time was the one thing we couldn't buy in the summer and it was I think the one thing we needed after all of our purchases.

The only thing that makes me slightly nervous is how long it's going to take to get the team to gel. I hope for AVB's sake it'snot long. I'm confident he is the rman and I just wish that us Spurs fans can just take a step back here, look at the situation sensibly like we did beore we commenced this season and understand that it's gonna take time.

It's not like we are back in 10th spot now is it!? We're doing ok points wise. You never play 100% all season, the best teams in any competition get results when they are not in form.

What a platform to build on!

So it's ok for you to criticise AVB on a public forum but when he does it back it's wrong? I've been a Spurs fan longer than most and over recent years I have found the quality of our support to be terrible. Some of our so called fans sit there with arms folded expecting! They expect mediocre players to perform like Messi and when that does not happen those folded arms start to wave and spit can be been seen flying from their mouths as they lambaste the player.

Here's an idea. Why not just do what AVB suggests. Let's all get behind the team no matter what. Let's cheer like we want to win rather than make a judgement on the opposition and expect to be entertained. If this does not work at the end of the season then you can write your sorry little blog about how wrong AVB was to criticise us fans.

It doesn't take much to work out that if the home support was just that, support, then it really would be the 12th man and probably turn a 1-0 home win over Hull into comfortable 4-0 win.

So after 10 games or whatever you have decided that Lamela cant play. What a judge of a footballer you must be. Think back to Gareth Bale when he first got in the team. Is there any chance that supporters give a player time to settle. If he turns out to be a failure then so be it but give the boy a chance.

Article completely unbalanced. Give the lad a chance. As someone said remember Gareth Bale and how long it took him to settle down.

lamele needs pitch time and a run of games. he can't be any more useless than lennon who provides zero from an attacking perspective. why did we buy lamella and chadli if we keep playing lennon.

If you understand why Lamela hasn't performed then why be critical in the first place? How many people work abroad at such a young age especially at a place of work where there is only one other person fluent in his language who isn't even of the same kind of age? Hopefully having his family here now will help, but either way I think most fans understand and are willing to be patient.

I sent a reply to the pathetic whingeing about Lamela. About the article saying the writer must be a great judge etc. I have been a supporter { not a moaner} for over 50 years. I have never sent a response in my life. But I think its about some supporters get real. We have been average for years. We now have a very good side with a bright young manager. Support him and the team. Booing and moaning does not help. By the way Modric was deemed hopeless, . If it upsets all the moaners then you should go and support the other mob where there are tens of thousands of them{ they wanted the manager sacked three months ago} A proud old duffer who loves THE SPURS. COYS.

And what the hell does your phrase "be careful of walking on eggshells mean" !?!? Walking on eggshells is a metaphor for being careful which is something you could do with more of.
