Frank de Boer – Right Manager For Our Future

Article by e-Spurs Correspondent Brent Weber

The hottest topic around Spurs is our future manager. Many believe LVG is the best choice. Some supporters believe Sherwood has done enough to keep his job for another season. Other names that pop up are Pochettino, Laudrup, and Klinsmann. Since AVB was sacked, I have always believed that Frank de Boer is the right man for Spurs. Not only are we a good fit for him but also he brings the right mix of youth, experience, talent development and tactics to make Spurs successful.

FDB has been approached several times by bigger clubs because of his success but has turned those jobs down for various reasons. I think he has been waiting for the right club and the right opportunity. Spurs are not a huge club but we are by no means small. We offer the resources (facilities, youth program, transfer funds) of a big club without the pressures that come with managing a United, Chelsea, Liverpool, or City. We don’t expect multiple trophies every season. We do expect to compete for trophies and consistently challenge for a top four spot. We also want to play attractive, attacking football. In my opinion, we are the perfect size and the perfect opportunity for him to transition into the Premier League.

He is a proven, consistent winner. He was a very successful player. He was a very successful youth coach. He has been an assistant of a top national level team. He is on track to win his 4th consecutive Eredivisie title. He has paid his dues and has won at every level for multiple years. LVG has a better resume than de Boer but he is also 20 years older. Laudrup and Pochettino don’t bring the experience or the consistency like de Boer. Klinsmann has been a good national team manager, but has only 1 year of club managing experience under his belt. Frank de Boer offers the right combination of youth and experience.

He has proven that he can develop talent. He spent 3 years as the Ajax youth coach where he worked with several successful players. Numerous former Ajax players have moved on to be successful in the Premier League which shows that he could also develop our current players into top Premier League talents. Suarez, Vertonghen, Vermaelen, VDV, and Eriksen are only a few of the players he worked with while at Ajax. There are several current Ajax players being linked to bigger clubs in the summer. This proves that he can both evaluate players as well as develop their potential. Spurs have several young players with high talent ceilings. I am confident that he could come in and help players like Lamela, Carroll, Chadli, Bentaleb, and Holtby reach their full potential while building Spurs into a top tier club. In addition, Spurs are an attractive club that would only increase his ability to recruit and develop top youth talent.

He also brings a proven system and good tactics to the table. He teaches and plays an attacking, pressing 4-3-3 system. His style and tactics are greatly influenced by LVG, having played under LVG for several seasons. He teaches fundamentals, discipline, accountability, and a team first concept. His system obviously works considering he is heading for his 4th straight title. A more impressive fact is that he continues winning titles despite Ajax selling their top players each season. It proves that he is successful because of his system and not because of the individual players. As much as we don’t like to admit it, Spurs are a selling club like Ajax. We need a manager that can implement a successful system, develop talent, and win consistently despite transfer activity. FDB brings a system that would mesh with Spurs current management and financial philosophy.

Regardless of who Levy hires, I will support the manager because the club is more important to me than the manager. However, if I was hiring the next manager, I would look no further than Frank de Boer and I would do whatever it took to bring him to Spurs immediately. He could start immediately without the distraction of the World Cup. He is very familiar with some of our key players. He would have time to evaluate the roster and identify our needs prior to the transfer window opening. He could hit the ground running and start preparing us for next season.

Frank de Boer is the complete package. He is young like Pochettino, but has a longer, consistent track record of success. He coaches an attractive style of football like Laudrup and LVG, but is younger. He is an energetic player’s coach like Klinsmann but has more experience at the club level. He offers all the qualities we need at Spurs.

We need De Boer as our next manager!

  1. A good read but how much of Ajax can he take with him? Managers are part of a team and due to Ajax's continuity it's unclear how many coaches he could bring in, I doubt our current first team coaches could teach our players to play the Ajax way. Berkamp is his number 2 but will an Arsenal legend really come and work for Spurs or more likely get offered the head coach position at Ajax.

I like De Boer, hate Laudrop as a management choice as his entire management career screams average, with his Spartak side being known as the most boring team in Russia. I think we need a manager that we know can move in between clubs just now though, AVB at Porto had a similar support set up that he was unable to recreate with us and though he has more years I worry De Boer might also struggle without the boardroom and coaching set up that he has at Ajax.

Lots of good points for Frank de Boer and would certainly be more of a long term appointment than Louis van Gaal. Especially after being at a club that have a great youth policy and have produced numerous decent players who are now plying their trade at some of the best clubs in the world. It would be nice if that same style could be implemented at Spurs
However could you see our chairman giving him the time to be successful?
