1. Go 2-0 up in the first half and cruise
2. Concede 2 sloppy goals that could have easily been cut out
3. Have a rising star score a late winner with aplomb
Well that’s how it usually goes and that’s how it went in another swashbuckling friendly in the USA! Another great game for the neutral against Toronto, with quality goals and even better errors from both sets of defence. We saw some sharp movement and pressing from our Spurs, as well as fitness noticeably improving and that is the main priority for these games. It’s a bonus to win but the key component is that Pochettino uses these games to implement his style, and that the players reach a desired level of fitness.
For a few moments in the first half I thought I was watching Gareth Bale out on the left hand side, it was only until I realised there was no slicked back hair and no girly hair band a la the terribly acted BT advert. Nay it was a majestic Peacock showing his colours, displaying a rainbow of efficiency along with clinical finishing. I was witnessing a young star that has himself said he has been given a new lease of life, and he is making such positive progress to being a focal point of our team. Yes the opposition is questionable and yes it’s a friendly but you cannot deny the ability to make something happen and produce strikes like he did.
The first strikes comparison to Bale’s first and second in his infamous hat trick against Inter was startling. I am not doing a Morris dance knee jerk here, as there are far sterner tests to come once the season begins, yet his positive energy in social media is indeed being replicated on the pitch. Most importantly, Lamela is looking like the asset we all thought he would be last season. Those who wrote him off may be quietly crawling back to show him drips and drabs of support and I for one hopes he proves the haters and the doubters wrong. If he can display this ability consistently then we have a top talent who can mix it with the best.
We also have some BRAND new players in our midst, one of which was training with us before it was announced. Tut tut Ben you naughty boy! Surely clubs know by now that people have things called cameras that can actually capture snapshots of moving things, when will these people learn? Ben Davies; a solid signing for Spurs, maybe not as marquee as we like but he’s young, fresh and ambitious so I look forward to him in our lb spot. Although not the quickest left back he has a great tactical awareness and he reads the game effectively, that is most useful for defending and attacking, something we haven’t seen much with Danny Rose, so I can see him prospering for us under Poch and at Tottenham.
We have also captured Vorm, with Sigurdsson going in the other direction. My Open Letter to Sigurdsson:
Oh Gylfi, I liked you and you always gave your all for us. Sometimes I feel you tried too hard and made things complicated for yourself but I’m sure you will prosper at Swansea. P.S. please don’t score any screamers against us.
Thanks.
As for Vorm I have read a lot about fans being confused with his capture. I don’t understand this at all. It is unlikely he will usurp Lloris, this is true, but wouldn’t you rather have two quality keepers than one? If the man is comfortable playing second fiddle to Lloris then by Zeus’ beard let it be so! I love the fact we now have a keeper like Vorm as backup. Plus with the Europa League looming, which means travelling to Middle Earth and back, we have a quality keeper that we can have confidence in playing for us. Don’t hate, Embrace. Maybe a powerhouse striker next? Pwetty please Daniel, just that and we’ll have the metaphorical cherry atop the cake.
Stay Frosty.
