This week, The Telegraph had a go at predicting the opening-day starting XIs for all of the Premier League title contenders.
It is slightly surprising that Tottenham were even included in this exercise, considering that we are around 66/1 with most bookmakers, which leaves a significant gap to Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and the Manchester clubs.
Nevertheless, this is what they came up with:
Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Davies; Paulinho, Schneiderlin, Holtby; Eriksen, Adebayor, Lamela
I give them an 8/11. What would you give them?
Despite the arrival of Michel Vorm from Swansea City, supposedly to offer competition to Hugo Lloris, the Frenchman is still very much number one.
He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has recently committed his future, in contract form at least, to White Hart Lane by penning an improved five-year deal.
Vorm, who has faded somewhat after a terrific start to his career in England, provides us with one of the best deputies in the country, and will perhaps keep Lloris on his toes that little bit more than 43-year-old Brad Friedel would.
But Lloris will be Mauricio Pochettino’s first choice, and may even be given the responsibility of captaining the side, as he does the France national side.
Unlike Vorm, Ben Davies will come from Wales and straight into the team, with Pochettino seeing him as a better defensive option than Danny Rose.
Rose has had a taste of first-team football now and may not stay at the club to fight for his place, and thus Davies will be even surer of his starting berth.
Kyle Walker could have the other full-back position tied down for the next decade, if he can cut out the brainless mistakes that are marring his game.
Certainly, though, the England international will be persisted with for this season at least, and could be a real weapon for us if Pochettino can incite from him the same levels of performance that he did his full-backs at Southampton.
The central defensive pairing is not so transparent, with Jan Vertonghen supposedly interesting Barcelona and Michael Dawson likely to leave.
Noises from Spurs suggest that Vertonghen is going to be locked in chains and kept under personal surveillance by Daniel Levy to ensure that he stays.
He suffered a huge dip in standards at the back end of last season, but could return to the form that saw him named in the 2012-2013 PFA Team of the Year if he is motivated to play under the new manager and given a regular partner.
Dawson has been a great servant over his nine-year spell as a Lillywhite, but it is time for him to move on, and a series of injury problems likely mean that Younes Kaboul will be demoted to back up alongside youngster Ezekial Fryers.
The confident and skillful Vlad Chiriches is a favourite of mine and showed promise in his debut campaign, but his method of defending splits opinion and Vertonghen could do with a pacier, more physical companion.
Chiriches may be a starter against West Ham United at Upton Park, but expect Pochettino to enter the market for a first-choice centre-half before the close of the window. Why we weren’t in for Steven Caulker, I cannot figure out.
Critics of Paulinho’s passing and work rate need to appreciate that he offers us something that we have not had in years – a genuine goal threat from the middle of the park.
He should be a mainstay of the XI this season, providing that he is fit and fresh following another draining summer, and although Morgan Schneiderlin is odds-on to join him in a three-man midfield, Southampton’s reluctance to sell and Levy’s famous haggling mean that his fate could go undecided until deadline day.
I anticipate Nabil Bentaleb and Moussa Dembele, not Lewis Holtby, completing the trio for the trip to Upton Park. Maybe Pochettino is the manager who will finally make a player out of the uber talented and yet often dispensable Dembele.
Having that physical presence in central areas will allow Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, our two most gifted players (allegedly!) the chance to focus on making an impact in the attacking third, as Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez were allowed to do with great success at St Mary’s.
There is a confidence around the Lane that £30m club-record signing Lamela will begin to show his true colours under the guidance of his Argentine compatriot, and he must be given the opportunity to do so with a prolonged run in his preferred role, drifting inside from the right wing.
Eriksen was one or two cuts above the rest of our offensive-minded midfielders last season, scoring seven goals in 23 Premier League starts, and could excel even more should we surround him with players of hopefully better quality.
He is most comfortable in a central role, but showed that he can still be effective playing off the left, and that could be where he spends most of his time if our primary formation is 4-3-3. That could change to 4-2-3-1 for home games against sides in the bottom half of the division.
A striker must remain a priority in the transfer market, and with the names being linked, mainly Wilfried Bony and Romelu Lukaku, of the Emmanuel Adebayor mould, the Togolese enigma could be frozen out again.
This summer could be a good time to rid ourselves of the Adebayor baggage. Hopefully we will find a suitor in the shape of Monaco or another money-rich fool, and Roberto Soladao will lead the line until a replacement is bought.
Soldado’s pedigree suggests that he is almost certain to have a better campaign than last and he will present a good alternative to our main goal getter.
So, Mr. Telegraph writer, I am taking you on. With some of, but realistically not all of, Schneiderlin, a defender, a striker and Antoine Griezmann, oh god please Antoine Griezmann, to come in and improve it, here is my XI for August 16:
Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Davies; Bentaleb, Paulinho, Dembele; Eriksen, Lamela; Soldado
Let’s see who wins. The best of luck to you.

Chiriches will do a sulk and run.
ReplyDeleteWho does Griezmann replace in your starting XI?
Playing Eriksen on the wing is inviting teams to run through the left side all over again. It's an obvious mistake.
ReplyDeleteFailing to see that Soldado will be our main striker is also a mistake. He's going to be massive this year. Hopefully with prober service and players around him
If it was me, I would go with:
-------------------Soldado-----------------
Townsend-----Eriksen------Lamela
---------Schneiderlin---Holtby--------
Davies--Verts---Chriches--Walker
-------------------Lloris--------------------
If we get Griezmann he would replace Townsend and I would go for Sandro if we didn't get Schneiderlin.
Holtby is the perfect player to go alongside a DM as he's both great going forward and aggressive when defending. His stamina allows him to run all game and he's more dangerous from outside the box than Paulinho is
But hey….that's just me
Don't be surprised to see Lennon still starting a lot of games. Every new manager continues to pick him, he must do a lot right in training. Also, don't discount Dembele to start alongside Paulinho. Personally i would pick the beast to play along with Paulinho but my gut says it won't happen. I also don't think anyone is completely sold on Holtby just yet. Schneiderlin is a good player but not a smart signing for us as we have an incredible number of players to pick from for the 2 deep lying midfielders. Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro, Capoue, Bentaleb, Carroll, Holtby. Squad depth is not much better anywhere in the Prem.
ReplyDeleteSoldado
Lamela Ericksen Lennon
Dembele Paulinho
Davies Vertonghen Chriches Walker
Lloris
Why does no-one rate Capoue, Poch could bring out the best in him! He can be as good as Sandro defensively, and is much more comfortable on the ball. I don't think Schneidlin is needed, or good enough. Capoue and Holtby in mindfield could be great!!!
ReplyDeleteLloris; Walker, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Davies Dembele; Eriksen, Lamela; Soldado
ReplyDeletelennon Capoue
Lloris
ReplyDeleteRichards Vlaar Vertonghen Davies
Sandro Dembele
Lamela Eriksen Griezmann
Bony
That's the team I'd like to start against West Ham.
I agree with anonymous above. I personally think Capoue could be brilliant this year.
ReplyDeleteLennon is a waste of space and should only ever be used as a sub. Why or why can't people who back him see this? He's been with us for years without doing anything. Please understand that lennon will never change and will always be brainless with his final ball
ReplyDelete-------------------Soldildo-----------------
ReplyDeleteGriezmann-----Eriksen------Lamela
---------Schneiderlin---Holtby--------
Davies--Verts----(blank)---Walker
-------------------Lloris--------------------
This formation with either griezmann or jay rodriguez on the right, schneiderlin or capoue or sandro at their best along with holtby at cdm and a decent other centre back would give me a wet dream. Also soldildo could be replaced but i think he'll be good this season.
I think lemela, eriksen and griezmann should interchange alot, not having strict set positions
It might just be me....but I reckon Ade is a better player than Bony or Lukaku and will do the business for us this year. Give him the chance and he'll bang in 25 for the season.
ReplyDeleteChiriches looks like he is way to Roma. I think Capoue will be the defensive midfielder. He was very good against Toronto and Pochettino appears to rate him, whereas it appears he doesn't rate Holtby that highly as he appears open to him being sold or at least going out on loan. Assuming he has recovered from his bout of malaria in time I see Adebayor starting instead of Soldado. Somebody has put Griezeman in his team when it's far from certain he will join Spurs. He also mentions Rodriguez when he out until Xmas with a bad injury!! Do some supporters live in the real world?
ReplyDeleteI dont understand how people can leave a player like capoue out! He was good before his injury last season and he has been amazing this pre season tour! He is also a poch type of player!

Using only players currently at the club this is what id go for
ReplyDeleteLloris
Walker Kaboul Verts Davies
Holtby Capoue
Lennon Lamela Eriksen
Soldado
Give Soldado the rest of pre season to prove himself otherwise id replace him with Ade
Supposing Sandro is going and we miss out on Schneiderlin, Capoue is our best option as holding DM. He has a real physical presence, strong in the air and calm on the ball. Play either one of Dembele,Paulinho,Bentaleb alongside him as the box-to-box MF. Id go with a 4-2-3-1 with players currently at the club:
ReplyDeleteLloris
Walker Kaboul Vertongen Davies
Capoue Paulinho
Lamela Eriksen Lennon
Soldado
Lennon is more reliable in his defensive duties than Townsend/Eriksen on the left. Soldados interplay between Lamela,Eriksen etc is better suited to Poch's style than Ade who often struggles with one touch football and slows the attack down.
What we do lack compared to the rest of the top 6 is pace, with only Walker and Lennon what I would call real speedsters.
Vertonghen will be a super player this season provided he is playing as a centre back. He clearly dislikes the LB position even though he can competently play there, and I feel with some stability at the club this season as opposed to the circus last season, he will feel more comfortable and just get on with playing...and playing well. We desperately need another CB in this window, Chirches will be the starting CB alongside Vert but we need another player as back-up with the injury-prone Kaboul and inexperienced Veijokvic. I couldn't disagree more with the author's midfield prediction, in my humble opinion neither Dembele nor Paulinho will find themselves in the starting side at the beginning of the season. Both have appalling passing ability in the PL and will have to improve this part of their game immensely before Pochettino considers them. In my humble opinion, you'll see Holtby playing alongside a holding midfielder (most likely Sandro, but Capoue could put a strong case forward with a good preseason, and Schneiderlin if picked up would probably take this role immediately). His passing, energy, aggression and his stamina will see him in that position with Eriksen ahead of him in the playmakers role. Lamela will undoubtedly find himself in a wider role with a licence to roam and I think Andros Townsend will take the other wide role in a season I predict he will light up and develop into a truly world class player.
ReplyDeleteStarting Lineup:
ReplyDeleteLloris
Walker Vertongen Chiriches/Kaboul Davies
Capoue Paulinho
(Griezmann) Eriksen Lamela
Soldado
Bench: Vorm. Chiriches/Kaboul Fryers/Fredericks Dembele Sandro Lennon Kane/Adebayor.
Hoping Poch keeps with his youth policy, if not then at least there will be plenty of experience to call on.
The backs speak for themselves, thinking poch will have the game plan/style of play to bring the best out of Soldado up front, while the midfield is easily the hardest to pick seeing how many players we have to choose from. Paulinho after getting a decent rest for the first time in years will find the form that made him one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world. Capoue (having been likened to Patrick Viera) will be the holding midfielder, breaking up opposition attacks before releasing our talent on quick counter-attacks. Eriksen sitting in centre as playmaker with Lamela out wide and my one hope is getting Griezmann which would be amazing under Poch. If not then Lennon/Townsend will hopefully up their game.
Townsend is a one trick pony, cut inside from the right & shoot........... GET RID
