"No Defoe, No Problems"

With the news today of Defoe being injured, Marc Ashed looks at the options we have available and the men capable of replacing JD.

With the news of Defoe's injury, its time to look internally for options and what we find looks very promising.

It has come out today that Jermain Defoe will be out up to 3 games with a muscle injury. At first glance, it would be a reason to panic. Our only out and out striker left is Adebayor who hasn't been able to hit the net even if somebody threw one on him. We have been winning without a successful strike force and the last few weeks, AVB has preferred Adebayor to Defoe. The goals are not coming but it does look like Ade is working harder and playing with more fervour than he has all season.

Silver lining here is that our u-21 team has been scoring goals left and right and to run out a player like Shaq Coulthirst against Basel as a substitute or later on in EPL games would not hurt. Since Defoe & Adebayor haven't been scoring goals themselves, then all Coulthirst really needs to do to prove at least as effective as the current pair is to create space with runs through the defense and provide link up play up top so that the midfield & Jan can attack. Due to Shaq's assists & playmaking ability in addition to his goal scoring, I am confident that he could do an acceptable job up front. Coulthirst has been scoring prolifically at every level including in the prestigious NextGen series. He has impressed against the likes of Barcelona and PSG's youth teams to name a few. I'm not saying that he is the solution to all of our striker woes but he is an internal option that has the potential to fill a key role for our Europa League run and our chase for the Champions League.

Coulthirst
Unfortunately, we have loaned out Harry Kane, Jon Obika and Soulimane Coulibaly who all could have received some run with the first team. Clint Dempsey is another obvious option although he is best playing off the striker and with Bale's emergence there, Dempsey really doesn't have a position to fill for us. We are a little short for cover but no reason to worry. No Defoe, no problem.

A HUGE match this weekend against Everton is coming up with them missing Fellaini and Pienaar. The game will be a 6 pointer and would make the rest of the season a little less stressful with a W.
