Samba Spurs

Article by e-Spurs Dep. Editor Marc Ashed (USA)

Welcome to silly season, when agents and newspapers make their money. It is tough to find your way through the ridiculous links and absurd money figures being dished around. One story that has serious legs and legitimacy is the pursuit of Brazilian stars this summer. Leandro Damiao, Bernard and Paulinho are all very firmly on Spurs radar. The three Samba stars would add immense quality and balance to our squad. Equally as important, all 3 players are wanted by AVB and Baldini. These are not players that Levy wants and is forcing the manager to incorporate them, the signings would signal a strong and deserved backing of AVB.

The 24 year old, Paulinho is a perfect fit for the 4-3-3. He is valued at between £14.5 and £17 million. His talent was on show against Japan in the first match of the Confederations Cup and in the friendly against England when he hit that beautiful volley from 15 yards out to even the game. He is a box to box midfielder that would serve as a perfect compliment between Dembele and Sandro. He is strong in the tackle but equally aggressive moving the ball forward and starting the attack. He fills that Moutinho role in the 4-3-3 that we've been searching for.

Conveniently enough, Paulinho's agent Giuliano Bertolucci also represents Bernard. As the rumours swirl that Bertolucci is in England for talks, he could wrap up double commission with Bernard and Paulinho.

Bernard is a diminutive playmaker at only 5 ft 4 but with great dribbling ability that we currently do not have in the squad. He can play behind the striker or on the wing. He would project as a winger opposite Bale and rotating in with Lennon. Offensively, Bernard can truly do it all. He scores goals from free kicks, he is a skilled crosser, he possesses great vision to set up teammates and can create for himself with his elite dribbling ability. At 20 years old, he will only continue to improve and get stronger. Rumours are that we have offered €18M, while Atletico Mineiro is holding out for €25M. Bernard is our top target this summer.

Do I really need to write anything about Damiao? Some sources say that we are fed up with Internacional and will not follow up on any interest while others (very credible, might I add) maintain that he is our #1 striker target this summer. I get the feeling that Internacional have priced Damiao out from a lot of clubs such as Napoli or Marseille and keep offering him to us at different prices. This is the summer that we will get our striker. The price will likely be around £15m.

With rumours of a 10 player clear out, it is easy to see where the funds will be coming from. While players like Tom Ince are likely to join, there is still enough funding for the roughly £50 million that would be required for the 3 Brazilian stars.

The impact can not be put into words. Our weakness in the 2nd half of the season was a lack of depth and rotation. We broke down as the Europa League ties picked up and tired legs cost us the 4th Champions League spot. With a squad full of AVB players at his disposal, he could implement a rotation filled with skilled and versatile players. Let's hope that these 3 Samba stars will be joining Sandro to grow our Brazilian delegation and along with it, grow our squad quality.
