When rumours of purchasing Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin emerged early this week, most of us took it with a grain of salt and simply shrugged off the rumour as paper talk with no truth whatsoever, or was that just me? However on Tuesday morning, news out of Italy broke out saying that Spurs had a £17 million offer for Guarin rejected.
I can't say that I wasn't surprised that the bid was rejected but the offer still shows our intent at purchasing players that AVB was previously worked with at FC Porto. This is all well and good but From watching Guarin, he isn't exactly a player that can change a game with a splitting pass or crunching last ditch tackle. Don't get me wrong I think Guarin is a good player but i believe that there are much better, younger alternatives that have the same versatility as Guarin but add more to the team and for a lower price.
I personally believe that Guarin is not worth the £20 million asking price set by Inter. He may have the physicality to play in the premier league and in AVB's system, but is it really worth forking out £20 million on him when we have more pressing issues for one or preferably two world class strikers and perhaps a new left back. This doesn't seem like a deal that Levy would follow through with, it seems as though he is just weighing up his options to see what is available to him and AVB in this summer's transfer window.
Most may agree that targets we have been linked with like, Bernard, Pjanic, Eriksen, Isco and many more could be better alternatives to purchasing Guarin as they are much more technical players with the ability to open up a game with their flair and creativity. I personally feel that purchasing one or two of these guys would pay off much more in the future than getting a 26 year old Guarin.
Some may argue that we are fine in midfield and this money would be better spent on strikers. All season or strikers struggled to find consistency in front of goal and we therefore relied on Gareth Bale's wonder goals all season long. The ongoing saga of Leandro Damiao has grown old now and its getting ridiculous on how the saga changes day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month and in this special case year-by-year. This sort of money could finally end the saga in the purchase of Damiao and another striker personally i would like the signature of either Roberto Soldado, Jackson Martinez or Luis Muriel. These guys are all great strikers and i think they would be a great pairing with Damiao or Bale behind them.
Give your opinion on whether Guarin is our best choice or if we really need him.

I agree with this article to a certain extent, I think that's he is a player we could use in our midfield but I totally agree that maybe £20 million might be inter trying to get a bit more than he's worth taking a shot on and there are a lot of players we could go with instead. As you mentioned Eriksen or Pjanic and Lamela for me would be great but then it's a question of how much spurs would spend on a midfielder right now considering they need at least a striker. Number one target for Spurs in my opinion right now though should be Soldado. Exactly what we need.
ReplyDeleteReally like the look of Lamela, great versatility and has the quality to play in the premier league, in a previous article i said he could be tempted to join tottenham after baldini bought him for Roma
ReplyDeleteAgree with the comment above, I do not think what Guarin is what we need, especially not at 20M. If you want that powerful midfielder then surely Paulinho (cheaper/younger/looks better) would be a better option. However I personally feel that the perfect midfielder we need is a creative "lock-picker" as such. And the perfect candidate would be Eriksen, IMO he has it all - pace/skill/passing ability/goalscoring ability/awareness... etc etc. He would also cost no more than 15M. the only problem you would have is that Dortmund are reportedly very interested and he's been quoted as saying they would be a very good team to go to.
ReplyDeleteEriksen is a very good choice and is similar to modric in the way that he plays, great vision, movement etc but its just a matter of whether Levy thinks we need him, and if he thinks we do, whether he can move quick enough to take him from under Dortmund's noses
