You Don’t Win Anything With Kids?

Article by e-Spurs Writer Chris Mecoy (UK)

We’re all arguing about what signings we need to make, and indeed who we need to sign (apart from a striker, there’s no arguments there), but I can’t help but think we have a decent amount of talent in our Under 21 squad that we’ll be in danger of losing if we don’t start involving them soon.

For everybody in the know, despite the result in the ‘final’ (yes, that’s right, the F.A. decided that having a final to end a League tournament is a great idea!!), Tottenham Under-21’s were by far the best team in this year’s Developmental Premier League. In fact, if the powers that be had a brain in their heads and actually planned the League where all teams play each other twice in a League campaign (like pretty much every other League in the history of World football ever!!), Spurs would have won it extremely comfortably.

And this brings me to my point.

For the first time in a very long while, we have a very good Youth Squad at White Hart Lane, maybe there are a good few youngsters who are ready to make the step-up in 2013-14. I hate to admit it, but Arsenal have utilised their kids to great effect in the past, and Man United in 96-97 won the League having packed their first team out with their boys (Beckham, Scholes, Neville eg).

So who have we got?

For players like Pritchard, Coulthirst, Coulibaly, Ceballos etc., I think this season may come a bit too soon. A loan to a Championship or possibly even Premiership club would be more beneficial this term.
But we do have some talents who have already plied their trade at the top level and who many Spurs fans believe are ready to make that step up.

I’ll leave Steven Caulker off this list because he’s already made a good 50 odd appearances in the Premier League already, and didn’t do such a bad job for us last season. He’s not the finished article yet, but by learning his game from Vertonghen, Dawson and Mr Like-A-New-Signing Kaboul, he’ll only get better and better.

Harry Kane.
His time at Norwich was cut short sadly, and then he was shipped out to Leicester, but don’t be surprised to see Kane on our subs bench a lot more next season. Personally I think a loan move to a Cardiff, Palace or Norwich would be more to his advantage, AVB is known to be a fan, and he may give Daniel Levy a reason not to have to buy two strikers in the summer and save himself a few quid.

Andros Townsend.
Despite he’s personal ‘issues’, Andros Townsend was a very rare shining light for a shocking Q.P.R. team last season. I know Monrael of Arsenal is no Paolo Maldini, but he still regularly gets in the Spain squad and my Gooner mates all tell me they are pleased with how he’s done so far. The reason I bring this up, is that when the teams met late last season, Townsend got the better of him on EVERY SINGLE occasion. Dare I say it’d definitely be worth a few quid at the bookies on him doing a hell of a job on our left wing next season.
Sorry Andros, I couldn’t resist.

Tom Carroll.
What can I say about this kid? He seems to have become the darling of every Spurs fan, and why not. He seems to incorporate into his game the styles of so many before him, such as Modric, my personal hero Paul Allen, and the greatest ever Yid, Glenn Hoddle.
His footballing brain is extraordinary for one so young, and he’ll only continue to get better and brighter.
It’s not so much how he plays right now, but more the style of play he has that allows his team-mates to have the freedom of the pitch, knowing they have that protection in behind them, and that is a wonderful trait to have.

If we can use these three, particularly Townsend and Carroll, well next season, then it won’t be a case of who we sign in January or next summer, but rather a case of who else have we got in the Youths that can follow them up.

Anyone else I’m forgetting? Are these three not ready yet? Maybe you don’t think they’re good enough? Let me know below.

Come on you Spurs!!

  1. I completely agree with the three you've chosen, but I'd also keep Pritchard in and around the first team squad.
Some Euro/Domestic cup games on the left wouldn't be a bad shout.

Perhaps Andros to cover both flanks and Alex to cover the left flank specifically?

    1. I think you could be right. I would do the same with Adam Smith too I think.

Quite agree! Can certainly see Townsend making a significant impact next season - was a big loss for the Under 21s European Championship, would have been good to see him there. Could be the whole incident will have matured him though.

Tom Carroll is class and should have been playing in far more games. What a waste of a great talent. He lost out on playing for England either under 20 or 21 because he was not picked by AVB.

Alex Pritchard should be given opportunities to play for the first team because he is miles better than Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Dembele and Huddlestone.

The problem is with AVB who like Redknapp doesn't like playing youngsters unless they have loads of experience.
