As usual the close season sees rumours escalating about who Spurs will buy - from the ever present spectre of Damiao to the ever impending presence of David Villa. 'Will either of these deals actually happen' must be the thought coursing through every supporters mind. It's a familiar scenario with the summer passing by and expectations raised and lowered as the weeks progress with Levy holding back the purse strings until the final moment. When will he realise that cut price bargains on the last day will not profit the club or ensure success? The formal signing of Adebayor last season was a fairly predictable disaster and the news of his suggested departure to Besiktas can only be good news for us and bad news for the Turks. Obviously another fat pay cheque for Addy, so he will be smiling as wide as he did when missing that penalty.
The David Villa transfer looks like it will be a done deal though and he can only be a positive despite his recent injury problems. He may be 31 but having almost a year off with injury almost adds another year to his longevity and, these days, 31 is certainly not detrimental to a player's worth apart from any sell on value. That's really Levy's domain though - personally I think a players commitment is where the value lies. Villa would provide goals and a quality we missed all of last season and it does look like AVB may have the nous to persuade him to come. The one point of optimism this time is that AVB is not only established, as opposed to last year, but that he is now coveted by others so he may actually get his own way in the transfer market.
Paulinho has reportedly been signed according to The Daily Star but this has yet to be confirmed. However, he does seem to be suggesting it's almost a done deal and he is the type of marauding midfielder that we could do with. He would bring creativity and goals which are much needed from midfield. Parker and Huddlestone appear to be on their way and although both had strengths, they didnt include goals. Hudd will need more than one hairband at this rate but at least his charity is benefitting!
As for Benteke - we are linked to almost every striker but this, apart from being improbable, could be a big mistake. Yes, he had a good first season but he is relatively inexperienced and you only have to look at Andy Carroll to know the second season could be far more difficult for him since defenders will know about him.
Whatever happens it looks like the appointment of Baldini has signified a positive move in the direction of our transfer policy and I would expect at least one, maybe two marquee signings sooner rather than later. Otherwise, what is the point of Baldini?
It should be a fascinating couple of weeks and I anticipate a flurry of transfer activity which would bode well for the new season.

It's the same every year, we're linked to this world class striker and that world class striker and end up with either someone we don't know or a has been in his twilight years. If we are serious this year and I'm hoping that we are, I for one would let Adebayor go and bring in Benteke and Damiao, both young and both will have sell on value, If we ever need too.
ReplyDeleteI would think/hope that the appointment of Baldini would be as much about unearthing some rough diamonds (as Aston Villa did last year with Benteke) as it is about bringing in marquee signings. I share the author's reservations about Benteke though; whilst both he and Michu could push on again and have fantastic seasons, the odds are stacked against them as far as repeating last season's form goes.
