Article by e-Spurs Writer Antony Moule
Right ladies and gentleman, it is time to tackle that elephant in the room, that lingering smell of dirty laundry, that darn Gareth Bale situation. Before we get to that allow me clarify something for you all, just so you know where I'm coming from; I AM A SPURS FAN! However, I will attempt to write this article with (mostly) my all-round football knowledge and understanding hat on, and not my Spurs till I die hat with the blue and white tinted glasses.
Now that you understand
my loyalties, here's what I think Tottenham Hotspur, or more
appropriately Daniel Levy, should do. Sell Gareth Bale!!! Yep,
that's right; they need to sell the Welsh wizard for as much money as
humanly possible, or at the very least an extremely good part
exchange deal with many pounds thrown in.
I'm guessing you want a
bit more than that, so let me explain why. I watched every single
Spurs game last season, and (with my all-round football hat on)
Tottenham was not a "one man team", but Bale's contribution
to the team’s performance and standing in the league was
unparallelled by any other player across Europe. He was simple biblical to
watch, which is why most journalists, newspapers, ITK's and social media
outlets have taken the opinion that if THFC sell Bale, they are
ripping out the heart and soul of the team.
That may be true, but
let me explain why it doesn't matter....£100million OR (probably) Di
Maria and Coentrao and £40million. Many of you may argue against
this, and I have read good articles on the reasons that the money
isn't the same. Reasons such as spurs won't be able to spend it,
hyped up prices for transfer targets; Levy is a tight git etc...
etc... But that is simply not the case.
There are genuinely
quality players out there, available for the right price. Spurs have
already shown this in the acquisition of Paulinho and the shortly to
be announced Soldado, and with such a significant cash injection;
AVB, Baldini (THFC's DOF) and Mr. Levy would be able
to pursue some top players.
Let’s take a
hypothetical approach, if Tottenham sold Gareth Bale for in the region of
£100million, who would you go and spend it on. Personally (quickly
putting my Spurs hat back on), I would go get Brazilian wonder kid Bernard
(£22m) Everton's super left back Baines (£22-25m) and another
Brazilian, the striker Leandro Damiao (£22m). That's roughly £70m
spent on three players, but is there anyone out there who would suggest that
Tottenham would not have a great starting lineup and quality in depth
with these signings?
You also have to take
into consideration the player’s desire, eagerness and motivation to
play for you, or as it turns out, play for someone else. I would
rather see both Bale kept happy and in a good relationship with Spurs
(unlike Modric, Berbatov etc…) and Tottenham get an incredible deal
that will help them build on where Bale left us at.
For a bit of fun, let
us know if you would sell Bale and if so, who would you buy? You
could do that here, in our Forum or on our social media (Facebook /
Twitter).
Thanks for reading.

Just consider the money aspect of the sale:
ReplyDeleteBale is on about 60k per week (rough guess) or 3.1m per year, next 4 years is 12.m in wages that would be saved plus the 80m you get for him = saving of 92m to the club.
buy 3 players mentioned for 70m, wages are going to be 100k per week or combined 15.6m per year over 4 years = 62.m + the 70m = cost to the club of 132m.
so the net cost of selling bale and buying 3 new players with the cash is about a 40m extra cost!
That aint going to happen! Not on top of the other signings made or about to be completed.
You also forget Bales marketing value to the club, shirt sales profile around the world etc etc , sign bale and over a 3 year period you more than make the transfer fee back , so keeping him makes good fiscal sense
