The Time Is Now

I will start by saying that I am a huge Gareth Bale fan. I love watching him play and he is the current face of THFC. When people think of Spurs, they think of Gareth Bale! However, the latest rumoured offer for Bale from Real Madrid is 60 million + Angel di Maria + Fabio Coentrao. If we remove emotion and evaluate this offer rationally, I think you will realise or at least consider that fact that Spurs cannot turn this offer down! This type of offer comes only once in a club’s history and could set up Spurs for huge success for several seasons.

Essentially, this offer from Real Madrid is 4 world-class players for 1 world-class player in Gareth Bale. I understand it is Bale! As I said, he is the current face of the franchise and has huge marketing potential. He is a great player and probably had a once in a lifetime season. It is possible that he is on the upside of his career and could still be improving. But let’s be honest, he is not better than 4 world-class players!

In Bale’s last 3 seasons, he scored 11, 12, and 26 goals respectively. In addition to his goal scoring, he had 3, 14, and 10 assists in his last 3 seasons. In his last 3 seasons, he contributed to 0.598 goals per appearance. He has always shown huge potential and one could argue that he finally realised this potential last season. He is also a flashy, dynamic player and the current face of Spurs! He carried Spurs on his back all season. He is only 24 years old and if he continues performing like he did last season, his value will only increase and Spurs could make a mistake by selling.

Conversely, one could argue that he will not repeat last season’s success and Spurs could be making a huge mistake but not selling him now. His value could drop. What happens if he scores only 15 goals next season? What if he is injured? Does his value drop with his goal scoring production? In addition, do Spurs really want to deal with the speculation of him leaving during every transfer window? If he continues to perform, he will eventually leave Spurs for a bigger club. However, he might be leaving for less money. Why shouldn’t Spurs capitalise on him now? I personally think last season was probably a once in a lifetime season for Bale. I honestly think he is capable of 14-18 goals and 5-8 assists per season, which are highly respectable stats but definitely not worthy of 100 million.

Angel di Maria is only 25, which is only one year older than Bale. In his last 3 seasons, he has scored 9, 7, and 9 goals. In addition, he had 20, 16, and 17 assists per season. In his last 3 seasons, he contributed to 0.569 goals per appearance. He is wide player and more of supplier than a scorer. He is definitely not the focal point of the offence at Real Madrid like Bale is at Tottenham. He could easily increase his goal scoring in a system that increases his touches but he is solid, consistent, attacking winger and plays a very similar role as Bale did before this season with AVB.

Fabio Coentrao is also 25 years old and world-class LB. Spurs definitely need an upgrade at LB. BAE is on the downside of his career and does not appear to be playing at the same level as he was prior to his injury. Danny Rose is showing promise but is not the calibre of Coentrao. Not only does Coentrao defend well, but he is also a creative attacker from the LB position.

As far as the 60 million in cash, there are endless possibilities with this amount of cash. We could bring in multiple world-class players with this money. Spurs would probably use this cash on at least one or two more strikers or a striker and a creative midfielder or winger.

This deal would address our need at LB, provide quality, attacking width and allow us to bring in additional quality strikers, which we desperately need. In short, it is time for Spurs fans to move on and take the deal! I know it is hard to imagine Spurs without Bale but this deal could easily transform Spurs into a BPL title contender quickly and make THFC a competitive European club for several seasons.

I love Bale! However, one player does not define THFC. The simple fact is that I love Spurs more than I love Bale and it is time to capitalise on his value now!

As much as it hurts if that is genuinely the offer not some made up claptrap by Marca then i agree take the money

I agree with the sentiments and the cold hard logic HOWEVER I would reckon that at least 70% of all the media coverage regarding Bale is pure speculation so for the moment I want to wait to see what is reported following Levy's return to the UK to 'hold talks with Gareth'!! If that doesn't go well then fully agree that we would be daft to refuse the offer from Real Madrid.
    Cheers

I've gotta say I'd agree that if that offer was on the table I'd take it, there's no point keeping him against his will and potentially having him sulk around for a season and his value drop.

Let's be fair, when he wasn't showing promise we tried to flog him on the cheap, now he's incredible we expect him to stay. I'd hope he could be convinced that this is the season we can at least challenge given the change at the top, however we've been so sloppy in the market up to now that I don't think he's been convinced to stay.

With any luck we can invest £10million on some new knees for Ledley and buy a striker.

  5. 60 million + Angel di Maria + Fabio Coentrao would be a great deal in my opinion, but would these players come to spurs? What can we offer them that Real Madrid can not? Also which world class strikers are left in the market ?

  6. As long as Marca is the main starting point for all the rumours that we've read in the last few weeks, it's nothing more than unsubstansiated fantasy.
The facts, We know that GB is a level headed young man. ( I met him in Cardiff a few years ago, and he IS level headed)
He has a girlfriend and young baby in Wales and doesn't really want to uproot them just yet.
He has a very good working relationship with AVB at Spurs.
My feeling is that he will give Spurs another season, and possibly move abroad next year, when his young family is one year older.
P.S. With £60m in cash we could bring in MULTIPLE world class players? Really? Try one, maybe.

Could we bring any world class players in? Really? Why would a truly world class player come to us for Europa League football. We are not a title challenging club and so long as other clubs are being bankrolled by billionaires we won't ever be.

Even if we get di Maria and Coentrao, if they perform as well as they could, they'll probably be off in two or three years when they decide they want honours.

It's a shame that so few of the players love the club as much as the fans, but that's sport and life in general isn't it?

60 million + Di Maria and Coentrao? Sounds like red-top talk to me.

If it were true though, I think Spurs should take up the offer. Assuming Soldado is coming in anyway, the transfer window would not look too bad on paper.

    1. Soldado
    2. Di Maria
    3. Coentrao
    4. Chadli
    5. Paulinho

With another 60 million to spend, we could buy Dzeko and/or Osvaldo, not to mention some extra cover at centre back and right full, and still have some change in the kitty for January.

£50m plus those two guys would be a great deal, their wages maybe a problem and BAE would have to go but I'd bite their hans off. If Soldado is costing us a reputed £25m, are they saying these guy are worth a mean price of £15m.

The silly season, our vulnerabilities are taken advantage of every year.

Man Utd survived selling Ronaldo and that didn't stop the procession of trophies heading to Old Trafford.
I think we can survive selling Bale, the players on offer would certainly soften the blow and enhance the squad. Plus the money would go some way to bringing in 3 maybe 4 top quality players.
This is a rare situation in which we will win either way. If we sell Bale than the benefits are obvious for all to see good players and serious cash, if we keep him we keep our main man and get to see him at the lane next season.
Either way I'm not bothered, we can't lose...especially with Levy on the deal, he'll squeeze every penny out of Madrid.
    COYS!!!

  11. Selling Bale would be a big blow to Spurs Ambitions. Unless Bale submits a transfer request we should keep telling Madrid to "go fly a kite". If Bale does declare that he wants out then DL should squeeze every penny he can from them arrogant Spaniards.
