Dinamo Tbilisi VS Tottenham Hotspur - A PREVIEW

Article by Chris Mecoy

Kick-Off 5pm
Thursday 22nd August

Thursday night sees us kick off our Europa League campaign (hopefully our last one for a while) against Dinamo Tbilisi.

The news as I right this is, for once, not being dominated by Gareth Bale, but by the prospective transfer of Willian. With our squad, we could be considered one of the favourites for this competition, but first we have to get through a tricky tie in Georgia.

TBILISI

I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about the Umaglesi Liga Champions, but I do know they are Georgia's biggest side, and they were actually a force in the Soviet League before the break-up. They have also tasted success on the continent with victory in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981.

We are, on paper, the better team by far, but we will still have to be on our toes in front of potentially 53,000 passionate Georgians.

TOTTENHAM SIDE

My predicted team selection for the Palace game was nearly spot on (Vertonghen started instead of Capoue), but I think this one will be much harder to call. I feel AVB will field a squad mixed with youth and experience.

FRIEDEL

WALKER DAWSON FRYERS ROSE

CAPOUE CARROLL

LENNON HOLTBY TOWNSEND

DEFOE

KEY MAN - DINAMO TBILISI

XISCO: Tbilisi's top scorer last season, Xisco seems to know exactly where the net is. He also picked up Georgia's Golden Boot in the league as well. A former Spanish youth International, he played for quite a few teams in La Liga without really setting the world alight, but seems to have improved greatly since his move to Eastern Europe in 2011. Spurs will need to keep him quiet for this one

KEY MAN - TOTTENHAM

ETIENNE CAPOUE: If my predicted team selection is even close for this match, we are going to need Capoue to pick up where he left off in the Palace game, and play like his nickname "The Tank" suggests. If he does play in a somewhat inexperienced midfield, he'll have to get stuck in to protect the back four.

PREDICTION

I think this will be a trickier tie than we might think and I believe this will still be up in the air for the return leg at the Lane. We seem to have very low scoring games when we play away in Eastern Europe and I see Thursday being no different. It won't be pretty, but it will be effective, and another one goal victory for the mighty Yids.

DINAMO TBILISI 1 - 2 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Don't forget everybody, the match will now be shown live on ITV4 at 4:45pm in the UK.

COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Now I admit I deserve abuse for misspelling write, but this article was written before the team left for Georgia. I was unaware that Lennon didn't travel and Holtby wouldn't be risked (by the way, Anonymous 12:49, Holtby is no longer injured. He's been writing on his own blog about how great it is to be training again). I guess we'll see how wrong my PREDICTED team was at 5:00, eh?

Wow, he's put out an almost full strength side. I've never been happier to be wrong!! I'd give Tommy Carroll a shot though.
