One wonders if Arsene Wenger wakes up each morning in a cold sweat, panting, ripped from a recurring dream in which all the players he ‘could’ have signed all over the years stand before the end of his bed in some hybrid of a ‘What you could have won’ game show and Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.
The ship tends not to
so much sail when referring to Arsenal’s transfer policy, but
rather appears as a last glimpse on the cusp of the horizon, as
Wenger and company saunter to the nearest helpdesk and politely
enquire as to the ships whereabouts.
Wenger, was once the
hip, young French kid, yellow backpack on, stuffed full of treasures
unseen and a head full of ideas, who immediately got to hang with the
cool kids at the back is now slowly being forced further forward. In
fact, he’s now stood at the front of the bus, talking to the
driver. (Probably about players he could have signed).
Previously, Arsenal’s
transfer identity served them well as Wenger’s knowledge of the
African and French market was unique in the Premiership which added
to his collective effect on the league and gave Wenger a pool of
talent, untouched by others. But now, what was once unique is now
mainstream, and one only has to look to Newcastle’s scouting
network to see how far teams have come regarding foreign players,
especially of the French ilk. Arsenal have been left behind and now
appear to have an outdated transfer model bereft of leadership,
innovation and intent.
Arsenal seemed to have
now abandoned Wenger’s transfer policy as there is a general
acknowledgement that they have dropped off from the lead pack and the
perennial ‘building for next season’ drum that Wenger continually
beats is now just plain annoying. Large questions must be asked over
why despite Arsenal’s Champions League status and 21st
century stadium are they failing to attract not just elite players
but top prospects.
Is it simply that
attractive football aside, Arsenal are no longer an attractive
enterprise?
A short way across
London, Tottenham are currently embroiled with something of a David
Vs Goliath transfer wrangle with Marca Newspaper……. sorry, Real
Madrid involving the sale of Gareth Bale. If Madrid thought the
acquisition for Bale to be a straightforward process, then perhaps
they should of done their homework. Easier still would have been to
reflect on Tottenham’s steadfast stance concerning the sale of Luka
Modric.
Daniel Levy, Spurs
chairman and contractual/transfer hardball supremo outright refused
to even entertain Chelsea’s pursuit of Modric, prior to his end of
season sale to Real Madrid come the close of the 2011/2012 season. A
figure of 40 million pounds was reportedly tabled by Chelsea for
Modric’s signature, on the final day of the transfer deadline, yet
Levy foresaw both the external and internal implications of allowing
the sale to go through, stuck his fingers in his ears and ignored
Modric’s request until the close of season. Interestingly, Modric
finished the season with four goals (his highest tally) and six
assists.
Levy, it seems is not a
man to be trifled with when business matters are at hand. A caveat to
Tottenham’s brilliant acquisition of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was
Lyon’s chairman Jean-Michel Aulas saying;
"The
negotiation with the Tottenham directors has been the hardest I have
ever had to undergo in these 25 years.”
Which brings us to the
imminent sale of Gareth Bale (oh my heart weeps..dont go Gareth…and
back again..) to Real Madrid.
All reports signal that
Levy is adamant that only a princely sum with the addition of Alvaro
Morata as a makeweight in the deal will allow Tottenham’s stance to
alter. Tottenham do not need to sell Gareth Bale. His ascent to the
Worlds Most Expensive Footballer as been far sooner than anyone
imagined and Real ‘s constant thirst to remain ahead of the curve
and match their Spanish rivals, Barcelona who recently acquired
Brasil’s current shining star, Neymar, has inflated Bale’s
transfer fee to a level far exceeding his true value.
Tottenham appeared to
have wielded the assurance of Bale’s services for one more season
as a bargaining chip in the acquisition of Paulinho and Nacier Chadli
to good effect, and now with the addition of Roberto Soldado and
possibly that of Etiene Capoue stand to mount an excellent challenge
come next season, irrelevant of Bale’s possible move. Levy has
maneuvered Spurs into a checkmate position and now waits for Madrid
to finally surrender and topple their King. Their folly was to pursue
Bale’s signature so aggressively, somewhat blinkered, and
altogether quite unnecessary as no other clubs made a formal bid for
him and have now appeared to show their hand far to early.
Levy stands on the
brink of but two possible outcomes; The first being the sale of
Gareth Bale to Real Madrid with a figure of £104 million pounds
being estimated as a ball park figure. Just sit and chew on that on
for a minute…
The stumbling block
seems to be forming in the payment plan Real are insisting on, added
to this is the 20 million pounds still owed for Luka Modric;
Tottenham seem determined to secure a vast percentage of the fee
first, before any payment plan is proposed. And having already signed
the above-mentioned players, Tottenham’s transfer strategies have
yielded excellent rewards considering the club can only offer limited
European football. Therefore, regardless of Bale’s movement,
Tottenham are not in need of the funds to generate further signings.
Financially, Sours are a well run club so the £104 million is just
gravy….a boat load of gravy.
The second outcome is
that Bale remains at Tottenham as Real Madrid realise they have
bitten off more than can be chewed and spend the entire season with
their head down the toilet vomiting up bits of Bale transfer
speculation. Whilst this is happening, Bale has another storming
season, Spurs go from possible fourth placers, to; ‘Hey there Jose,
love the view from up here.’ and come the close of 2013/2014 season
everyone comes knocking at Levy’s door for Bale.
Meanwhile, Arsene has
decided he’s become very aware of his carbon footprint, and who
cares about sitting at the back with Jose, Andy, Grini and old Scary
Eyes.
A pushbike is a far
more sensible option.

ReplyDeleteSours, classic
ReplyDeletehehe love it, as for the naysayers i guess they are realizing that closing time at the pub is coming fast and they haven't gotten any girls out on the dance floor, haters gonna hate :P
ReplyDeleteWhen we actually finish above Arsenal we can mock and gloat. Despite all our bluster we have not achieved that yet; close but no cigar...
ReplyDeletemmm I like slagging them off as much as the next Spurs supported but maybe wait until 2nd Sep.... Just incase!
ReplyDeleteLOL, you poor deluded spuds, yet another spurs blog full of jealousy and bitterness towards your far superior neighbours.
ReplyDelete61 never again. Anyone for lasagne?
LOL
AFC
From a spud ....really .... does he also wake to see the ghosts of all those spurs managers that have tried an failed to finish above him..ALWAYS IN OUR SHADOW
ReplyDeleteButthurt spud. Regardless of your view on Wenger, he is a legend in the EPL, and will always be more successful than your current nervous wreck of a manager. A man who looks a few xanax's away from a mental asylum.
ReplyDeleteAlthough his signings so far have been pretty good to be fair.
Thierry from the halfway line..hehehe
ReplyDeleteAFC4EVA
A lack of a sense of humour from the repliers, its only a game, oh and by the way im a tottenham realist..note not a spud!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHa ha COYS !! We dream a beautiful dream the reality is coming , the future is bright the future is tottenham
ReplyDeleteThe two top players in the league last year Bale and Suarez, funny enough both want away one to Real and the the other to the team that finished above you again last year.
ReplyDeleteI repeat......no sense of humour
ReplyDeleteWheather we get Suarez or not he still wants to join The Arsenal.
ReplyDeleteThe only bus is the one filled with failed spurs managers since the arrival of Wenger:-
ReplyDeleteGross, Graham (He won 6 trophies for ARSENAL), Pleat, Hoddle, Santini, Jol, Ramos, Redknapp, AVB.
At least we have won something in the last 8 years
DeleteLol yeah that poo stain suarez would fit right in at your place might evern bring you lot a bit of class
ReplyDeleteCOYS
I wish, as an Arsenal fan, that we had someone like Levy at our club. He can teach the clowns on our Board a thing or 2. Well done with your signings this year. It's going to be tough for us to finish above you.
ReplyDeleteOh dear .. keep dreaming spuds fans. Always in our shadows COYG
ReplyDeletespurs last won league when? last finished above arsenal when? top player in league where you finish? just a joke to even compare the two teams.its always next year with spuds next year.
ReplyDeleteLove it the gooners can't see it coming blinded by all that sun going to there heads , don't worry you can have the shade in about nine months
ReplyDeleteArsenal...
ReplyDelete1) A big brand new paid for stadium
2) One of the best managers in the world
3) Are not Totenham who have not finished above the mighty Arsenal since 1995
4) A team who do not choke (on pizza or otherwise)
5) Pure class ( and class always tells)
just 5 reasons why Arsenal are and always will be the best team in London
I could go on but you Spurs fans would only cry!!
Ok then 1 more reason... Voted the Team of the Century by UEFA
What more can you say..
And God said to the Israelites go forth, but they finished fifth and now they have got to play on Thursdays.
ReplyDeleteYeah well done keep living in the past gooneys the futere is tottenham.
ReplyDeleteIn arsen you rust !!
For someone with a decent command of English, you made me throw up in my mouth a little bit when you wrote 'should of'.
ReplyDeleteSlightly deluded post, too - I could pick on a few things but I'll choose the 'Arsenal fail to attract good prospects' part.
I'm assuming you mean good young players - what planet are you living on? Sanogo looks a beast. Zelalem is only 16 and already better than a lot of starting premiership playmakers. The Ox is still a youngster (and capped for England), while there are at least six or seven other youngsters who look amazing for their ages.
spurs are MUUUUUUCCCCCKKKK!!!! ARSENAL FOR LIFE!
ReplyDeleteinteresting you point out newcastle who are essentially doing what spurs do to wenger. newcastle have developed an impressive network in africa yes, but wenger has long seen the folly of this and moved on. for instance, they go to the afcon every other year and come back needing more time to recover. spurs on their part are known to scent which way wenger is looking to buy, then move in and pay for players. sometimes for over inflated figures. nearly half of your foreign players have been sniffed by wenger's network first.
ReplyDeleteits going to be funny when the transfer window closes that I do know!! I will go to the arsehole blogs to have a good laugh, the only thing wenger cares about is his salary and 4th of course!!
ReplyDelete"Large questions must be asked over why despite Arsenal’s Champions League status and 21st century stadium are they failing to attract not just elite players but top prospects".
ReplyDeletewell, what kind of staff are you smoking, if i may ask??
you must consider liverpool star player LUIS Suarez a mini jermaine defoe then? Iam sure you know too Higuin, david villa and Jovetic all wanted to come to arsenal. you attempts to hijack david Villa must actually have hurt your pride too hence your failure to even make an attempt on want away Sarez. You know he has a small bit of requirement which both you and POOL cant match isnt it?
its not that you wrote an empty piece because you cant research, but that the truth from any such resaercg would have made it impossible for you to write anything at all. admit.
Cazorla, Giroud, Podolski. Total apx £40m, signed last summer.
ReplyDeleteYour point is?
mmmm. A manager who brought success to a club and eight years later hasn't won a trophy. Doesn't compete for the title anymore and scrapes Champions League football now. There are so many ARSEnal fans so deluded and blind to the problems at their beloved so called club that they turn their attention to THEIR recent neighbours scared. (South of the river was too tough for them. Spurs have made a couple of great signings and are slowly on the up while ARSEnal on slowly sliding downwards. Instaed of all this attention at Spurs, look at your own club and realise that it's all going wrong. How many attempts now is it at trying to win the Champions League? A Champions league team with this new stadium and no one wants to come and play. PMSFL. Big money on players coming to a Europa League team. They know the future. The Future is white. One thing giving ARSEnal fans hope is with this new regime at Man Utd they might get 4th place next season with Man City, Chelsea and Spurs finishing in the top 3. You club is sliding downwards, wake up and realise this you stupid ARSEnal fans.
ReplyDeleteIf Arsenal have such good youngsters why didnt they win the u21 comp hahaha you arsenal fans are a joke
ReplyDelete2 above...you say that every year, and every year you tools fall flat on your big shylock noses..BTW..you sound like you've really suffered mate...and that makes me happy..LOL
ReplyDeleteMind the gap..pmsl..
