When questioned on his possible departure from The Mestalla, Soldado was not about to give anything away as to what stage negotiations are between Spurs and Valencia:
“I am unable to
say anything and I will continue in my usual way of waiting to see
what happens, although when the time to speak arrives, I will speak
clearly about it, just as I have always done.”
After the toing and
froing between Levy and Valencia, Tottenham now welcome the arrival
of a much needed striker with arms outstretched a country mile with
overwhelming acceptance. If Spurs do mange to retain Gareth Bale for
another season, considering the additions of Paulinho, Chadli and
Soldado, they can be considered real title challengers in the next
campaign as a complete squad begins to unfold.
Although Soldado may
have experienced some unconvincing moments in the early stages of his
career, this could have arguably contributed to his eventual maturity
into one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. A natural goal
poacher, Soldado’s goals have mainly derived from inside the box
where his exceptional positional play results in his knack to be in
the right place at the right time…exactly what Spurs need
considering the numerous chances created per game via the multitude
of midfield creative outlets existing in the side.
Valencia’s talisman
scored an impressive 30 goals in 46 appearances last season with only
Messi and Ronaldo racking up more and with this impressive form
spanning over four seasons, the Spanish international could be just
the player to propel Spurs into a realistic title challenge.
Possessing tidy technique, Soldado can hold up play effectively, take
players on and is capable of releasing a killer pass. Following a
sequence of excellent performances, including the Confederations Cup,
it is also likely that he will be playing a starring role for Spain
in the near future, if Vicente Del Bosque’s recent comments are
anything to go by.
"I have to
commend Roberto Soldado," said the coach of the world and
European champions. "Because he did what a striker should do -
finish."
The fact remains that
Tottenham’s strikers have failed to produce the goals needed for a
realistic challenge. Jermaine Defoe pops up with periods of
unstoppable form where he will go on to score every game, although
the all too familiar barren run associated with the England star
season after season, renders the JD option as most likely off the
bench as an impact sub. With reports lingering and whispering of a
possible move to Turkey for Abdebayor following his shocking form
last season, it is likely that we may soon see the back of the
Togolese striker should the Spaniard make the move to White Hart
Lane.
Sealing Soldado’s
signature has made the disappointment of missing out on David Villa
seem like a distant, forgotten memory which will forever languish
within the bullet dodged section of fan’s minds. Although Villa
would have undoubtedly been an upgrade on the marksmen currently
leading the line, his longevity as a Spurs player would have been
questionable had he decided to migrate to the greener patches of the
Premier League...at least when it comes to the wage packet.
