Article by Chris Mecoy
Hello, Spurs fans.
I started off this week with the following thought:-
"My God, FIFA are pathetic. After months of arguing and the inevitable 'cash in the back pocket if you choose us' settlements, they have finally accepted that handing the 2022 World Cup to Qatar 'might have been a bit of a mistake'. I mean, our F.A.aren't great, but at least they're not that bad!"
That's all changed. After bowing to pressure, our F.A. have decided in their infinite wisdom that anyone using "The Y-word" will be prosecuted. Fair enough, you might say, but they are including Spurs fans in this as well!
Now I'm not going to go into larger details regarding the history and origins of the word, I'll leave that to David Baddiel, and the reason for this is simple. I want this article to be about OUR use of the word. Tottenham men. Tottenham women. Tottenham children.
Spurs fans.
Throughout generations, we, whether we be Jewish or not, have had to deal with torrents of abuse, and the Y-word was thrown at us from every corner. For whatever reason, and there are many, Spurs fans have grown very fond and extremely proud of the Jewish heritage of Tottenham, the very roots of the football club we all love. How often at a Tottenham match do you see the Star of David emblazened alongside the cockerel on a flag?
I was born and raised in Hackney, a stone's throw from Stamford Hill, home to Europe's largest Jewish community. I'd be walking down Upper Clapton road, wearing the cockerel on my chest with pride, and I cannot help but nod my head to every Jewish person I see. They respond in kind. It's a connection. We know it, they know it. It's a good thing!
We have adopted the word, we have reclaimed the word, we have taken the word and made it stand for something else. Whenever the Y-word is used, it is no longer about a Jewish person, but about a Tottenham person. We're not just helping to kick racism out of football. We're grabbing racism by the balls and beating the crap out of it!!
So, F.A., if you want to do something about 'anti-semitic' chanting, why not start with the songs about Hitler from our opposing fans? Better yet, how about you actually do something about the damned hissing noises that are meant to signify the gas chambers?
I'll tell you what, why don't you do your part in stopping our fans getting their heads kicked in by racist groups in Europe? Because I'll tell you this, the Y-word, when used by Tottenham fans is not racist. It is with a great source of passion and pride when we refer to ourselves as the..........
YID ARMY!!
Lastly, whether you be a Jewish person, a Spurs person, a member of the F.A., a member of the Society for Black Lawyers, or even Mr. Baddiel himself, if you were to remember just one thing about this article, remember this.....

What a well written thought provoking article. congratulations sir! Yid Army!!!
ReplyDeleteAs a life-long Spurs supporter I have to disagree with you. Tottenham Hotspur is a football club and should not be associated with any race or religion. we are a club for everyone no matter what there race or religion is. when you associate yourself with one type of race/religion you discourage others from being part of the Tottenham Hotspur project. Using the Y word should not be tolerated and rightly banned.
ReplyDeleteAre you really sure about that. A true supporter calls himself i YID no matter what!!! I am a Catholic and have no problem with people calling me a YIDDO, because it refers to my support of a proud historical club that as was rightly said in the article has adopted and embraced the Jewish roots it came with. If you are a supporter then shout from the rooftops that you are a Yid and not HIDE behind Anonimity. You are NOT a true supporter in my book if you have to hide!!!!!
DeleteAs a life spurs supporter I disagree with "Anonymous" and would argue you're missing the point son!
ReplyDeleteI would also disagree with anonymous and think he is also missing the point
ReplyDeleteOK ... Thanks for a very emotional article, i did shed a tear to these words. I am not Jewish. However i do respect them, their past and what they stand for. The same with every other creed and culture. I might not be Jewish, but i am proud to be a Yid. My brother is a Man U fan, even he calls me a yid, in fact he was my first ever introduction before my first visit to the Lane, he did not mean it offensive then and nor does he now.
ReplyDeleteNow ... i am a gay man. There are more of us amongst than you think .... we also adopted the word queer fags poofter .... i've heard them all and it dont bother me, we adopted them and used them ourselves the same way we adopted the word yid.
Proud POOF, Proud YID.
Well im not jewish but am a Spurs fan, and i tell you i am proud to sing the songs. Yid Army and proud, they suffered during the war. They lost family etc so if me singing that im a yid, i am sure they would not feel hard done by. I reckon like many they are proud to be thought of so highly at WHL. Spurs is in my blood long live our chants and long live pride and our passion.
ReplyDeletelol c'mon u spurs FA numpties context endearment empowered yid army! there are words that blacks or gays can use amongst their friends peers not as some fascist homophobic insult from rivals strangers they are bleep!...THFC 1882 outlaws casuals.
ReplyDeleteirish yid....this is all bull from FA....seems they are complaining now due to the fact that their beloved top 4 may be raped this year by us......FA WANKERS.......COYS!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing T-Shirts, badges and the like emblazoned with I'M A YIDDO. Also what about the chant We are Yiddos, We are Yiddos, We are Yiddos from The Lane ....
ReplyDeleteIf the FA dont like it tough, im sure they have more important things to worry over. Players getting drunk and fighting in clubs and drink driving, getting young girls pregnant whilst being married. Why dont they take a look at corruption with agents etc, and tapping up players. If it was Man u etc it would be overlooked, it is pathetic. YID ARMY
ReplyDeleteOh shut up
ReplyDeleteWere not fucking yids, were Tottenham. Endof
ReplyDeletewe are the Yid army , race colour or creed make no difference to a true Spurs supporter. We don't care who it upsets just get over it .There are so many more important things in life to worry about rather than if a football clubs supporters call themselves THE YID ARMY
ReplyDeleteCOYS
Excellent article, and couldn't agree with you more. The FA (like many authorities) attempt to silence us as when the minority complain, they decide we're an easier target than the true racism that goes on out there. Utterly useless.
ReplyDeleteYid Army! Yid Army! Yid Army!
As a retired front line Officer of the Yid Army (I'm a Catholic) I can say first hand and with great pride that the Yid Army is feared both home and abroad. The chant of "Yiddo's! Yiddo's! Yiddo's!" echoing down from the captured Arsenil North Bank or the Chelsea Shed is as much a part of our famous history as is winning the Double.
ReplyDeleteCOYS and COYY!
