e-Spurs Preview -Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

Article by Johnny Murwill

So much for Spurs in crisis. Since the mauling at the hands of Man City, Tottenham have picked up 4 wins and a draw from 5 games, with some of the much-missed flair and style seemingly returned. Such is the closeness of the Premier League this season, a win against Liverpool on Sunday would draw Spurs level on points with the Merseyside club. Despite the somewhat ridiculous criticism labelled at AVB this season, Tottenham could go into the Christmas period in touching distance of those at the top.

First they must take on a Liverpool side propelled by the individual brilliance of Luis Suarez. With 15 goals already, Suarez poses a threat formidable threat to any defence in the country, but Liverpool will be without both Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge. As a result, Spurs will be facing Liverpool at as good a time as any, and must feel confident of the win if they can keep Suarez quiet.

Possible Line-Ups:

AVB faces several selection dilemmas. Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul will miss the game, but Spurs could be boosted by the return of Vlad Chiriches, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose. Sandro’s presence in midfield will be vital in curtailing the threat posed by Suarez, and AVB will have to decide which two out of Dembele, Paulinho, Holtby and Eriksen start alongside him. Following his hatrick in the Europa League, Roberto Soldado should start against Liverpool, although AVB has said that his place is not assured.

Key Battles:

Sandro v Luis Suarez

How Spurs deal with the brilliance of Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker will be vital to ensuring a victory tomorrow. Sandro’s return to the team has made a mockery of claims by some fans that he would not be certain of place following the purchase of Capoue.

Lennon v Flanagan

Aaron Lennon has returned to the Spurs first team with a force, and his recent performances have shown that, despite continued criticism of his end-product, he remains an extremely useful tool in the Spurs armoury. The young Liverpool right-back could be in for a torrid time.
