Liverpool 3 – 0 Spurs.
Another big game at home, another big loss at home and another clean sheet for the away side. I may be inaccurate with my facts here as I spent the majority of the game hiding behind a pillow and shouting at Adebayor to pass. Alas another game where we have succumbed to the growing elite in the Premier League, without as much as a whimper. Like a lightweight fighter against a heavyweight we succeeded in landing tickling blows that only angered our opponent further. Throw in some horrible finishing (take a bow Chadli), and a dubious penalty and we have the complete Spurs defeat in a nutshell. I am not shocked or even too disheartened, as I marvel at this Liverpool side that was so inept two seasons ago and hope a similar fate is waiting for us under Poch.
Their first goal was slick and attractive producing incisive movement and for me summed up what we was greatly missing in the final third. For a first half of football it was competitive and although grateful Balotelli insisted on wearing his rainbow boots rather than his shooting boots, couldn’t help feeling if we didn’t score we would regret it in the second half. And so it proved. With a horrible penalty, but that is the game that we see week in and week out in this modern era of football. Lee Harvey Oswald was at it again, really I feel sorry for Joe Allen because if that’s what it takes to drop him then he must be in real trouble on a windy day. That aside, we were poor in the second half and didn’t offer so much as a sniff of goal or of fight. Yet I am not here to bash spurs I am here to breathe life into the work in progress that we are. It is fitting for Tottenham fans and neutrals to be excited at 4 wins in our first 4 games with some exciting football thrown in. However you need to look at the opposition to understand that we need to be winning those games and should be strongly in some cases.
Liverpool’s ethos is one that mirrored Poch’s own at Southampton. His few games in charge already seems to have had an immense impact on the club and players. Think of that ethos and philosophy in a year or twos time. The latest generation is about excitement and results in the immediate present but sadly it can’t always work like that. If we stay grounded and behind the club then we can be up there challenging for the title or at the very least the top four within a couple of seasons. The games against the big clubs are reason to be disturbed as we don’t seem to be able to get into the games at all, the memory of last year’s games against top opposition still gives me nightmares. However with Poch’s tactical awareness and players finally settling at the club, as well as new additions made this year, we are in a very strong position. I for one am still excited for this season to play out despite yesterday’s meteoric crash to Earth. Let’s hope transfer deadline day is a happy affair, and Levy buys us a new toy to idolise/criticise. Stay frosty.
