Can Tottenham win the Premier League

It’s a question not many Sky Sports pundits would even think about. Spurs may be the most overlooked club in the top 6, however, this may just benefit the club.

It was said last season and its being said again this season. Tottenham Hotspur like being under the radar. The management admitted it, the players too. Us fans seem to be the only ones continuously effected by the lack of acknowledgement or praise from the likes of Carragher and Redknapp. The radio silence helps us more than we believe, it strips us of the pressures that teams such as Chelsea or Liverpool face.

Do I believe Tottenham will win the league? No. Do I think there’s a chance? Of course there is. If you’re still talking about Arsenal or United winning the league then why aren't you talking about Spurs? Why was Tottenham’s huge win over rivals Chelsea only considered a good win for Spurs and a helping hand for others to win the league. This was the announcement of Tottenham Hotspur. This is the statement the club needed to really be considered in this 6 way title race. Or, it should be. Let’s welcome back pessimism for a minute just to ground us even after our great Christmas and New Year period winning run. Earlier this season we tore apart an unbeaten Manchester City at White Hart Lane. It could have and should have been a crushing 3-0 victory if it wasn't for a Lamela missed penalty. We overcame City 2-0 in style. We then faced West Brom away, we drew 1-1. So began a frustrating run where we drew 3 more league games in a row, including Arsenal away. During this period of 4 weeks from mid October to mid November we also managed to Lose to Bayer Leverkusen in the champions league at Wembley and draw in Germany. As well as being knocked out of the League Cup by Liverpool, losing 2-1 at Anfield. This wasn’t pretty.

Those results came off the back of a defining game. Two unbeaten teams facing off, the supposed underdog coming out victorious at home. But why is this important now? Well…We’ve just had a season defining game at home where we won 2-0 against a team on an unbelievable unbeaten run. Our next league game is against West Brom. Do I like those odds? No. Our following January fixtures are then City away and Sunderland away.

Listen, we can win all those games. In fact if we do then I’d say our chances of the title grow even more regardless of other teams results. Sometimes the less glamorous games are harder to win. Sunderland away is never a walk in the park. West Brom anywhere is also tricky due to their usually defensive approach to challenging games. City away may be the easiest of the three fixtures just because, again regardless of the clubs whereabouts in the league come the fixture, we would be considered underdogs. The pressure is taken off. The weight of expectation which has definitely hindered Tottenham over the years is no where near as heavy when facing clubs like Manchester City away than it is at home to West Brom.

For this club to really keep progressing it needs to take every game as a cup final. Whoever the opposition. We have proved we can beat anyone. Top of the league or bottom. It’s now about consistency. Not drawing as many games and for once in our recent Premier League history not finishing a season and going ‘if only we beat Bournemouth away in October…Then we would have finished *insert top 4 position*’.

  1. Well said Jono. The pundit who really irritates me most is Adrian Durham the supposed "shock Jock" of Talksport. He finds it almost impossible to give anything but faint praise to Spurs.
