Reports in Romania suggest that Steaua chairman Gigi Becali has now accepted Chiriches departure is inevitable and will allow the player to join Tottenham on on 29 August after playing in the second leg of the club's Champions League qualifying play-off against Legia Warsaw.

According to Adevarul, the transfer fee is £8.5m with half being paid up front and the remainder being paid next summer.

The paper adds that Chiriches has agreed personal terms at White Hart Lane and will receive £25,000-a-week in wages.

And Romanian
coach Victor Piturca appeared to confirm the move was back on when he told the press: "From what I know, in the next few days Chiriches will sign for another team."

Tottenham came very close to signing Chiriches earlier in the summer only for Becali to call off the deal at the last minute from his prison cell after becoming frustrated with Spurs attempts to push through the move.

At the time Becali reported told Steaua manager Mihai Stoica: "Who are Tottenham? I’m not a slave to anybody."

But Becali has since had a change of heart, and will grant Chiriches a move to England after he plays his part in helping Steaua qualify for group stages of the Champions League.

Steaua captain Alexander Bourceanu praised Chiriches for his role in the clubs 1-1 draw in the first leg against Legia, saying: "He's the best
player from Steaua, the most valuable, the most in shape. I think the impact that I have on the team does not compare to that of Chiriches".
