So what did we learn against Anzhi?

Article by Mike Davis

Probably apart from anything else, we learnt that we have a very big squad and there are players to come in and do a job in pretty much every position.

We learnt that Soldado is indeed a ‘fox in the box’ (think we knew that already though), and if you give him the right passes in the right areas he will score goals.

Lamela is definitely struggling at the moment. I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting him to come good but his contribution last night was quite sporadic. On that performance I can understand why AVB seems reluctant to pick him.

It was a great opportunity for some youngsters to impress and I felt that Freyers was solid but where have we been hiding Fredericks! Is it possible that he is actually quicker than Walker! His overlapping was excellent and perhaps even more encouraging was the number of times he sent over a cross. Definitely one for the future. I would have liked to see more of Coulthirst as when he did come on he looked very lively and direct.

Danny Rose made his comeback and will give us another option at left back, hopefully freeing up our centre backs to play in their proper positions.

It is obvious that our squad is more than capable of coping with all four competitions and unlike recent seasons, we appear to be having a real go at doing as well as we can in all of them. We can now put the Europa to bed for a while and concentrate on the PL, and the two cups. We owe West Ham and victory next week would put us in the semis. Whilst we might not have chosen Arsenal away for opening FA Cup tie, at least we know the players will be up for it and will need little motivation.

Firstly we have Liverpool at the Lane on Sunday and it has the makings of a cracking game. Both sides attack and in Suarez they do have probably the best striker in the PL at the moment.

The most encouraging thing I have seen in the last week is the style of football we have played. We are getting the ball forward much quicker and as a result we are creating far more chances. It started with the second half at Sunderland and carried on last night. Long may it continue as it’s good to watch and in my opinion gets the best out of the players we have. COYS!

"We are getting the ball forward much quicker and as a result we are creating far more chances" - I don't know to whom u r referring to by "we". It's never the same we. Nobody knows who this so-called manager is going to play in the next game. Hasn't got his best 11 sorted.

  3. With Gerrad out we should have a better midfield than Liverpool. If we can stop Suarez being fed we can concentrate on scoring.
