Spurs are looking to play their first match in a brand new stadium by 2017. This means that construction on the reported 58,000 capacity ground will need to begin by the end of this year. A new stadium is seen as an essential part of the push to guarantee higher finishes in the Premier League as well as European football through increased ticket sales, sponsorship, and merchandising opportunities.

The current White Hart Lane has a capacity of 36,000, which is unable to handle even the season ticket waiting list of 47,000, let alone match day ticket sales. The consistency of sellouts has limited Tottenham’s recent growth and the club is keen move forward.

This marks the hopeful end to a long and drawn out process that saw a bid for the Olympic Stadium rejected and eventually awarded to West Ham United, numerous rejected bids to increase the capacity of White Hart Lane, and blocked proceedings for a new stadium in past years. However, it was an apparent recent bid for Upton Park that should have most Spurs fans surprised. Go play in the home vacated by the club that won the bid against Spurs for the Olympic Stadium? No thanks. Keep your shack. We’ll find a way to build our own.

While Tottenham’s desire to build a new ground has been blocked by compulsory land purchase issues, this now seems to be sorted out. Over the past years, the club has bought 18 acres of land adjacent to White Hart Lane and helped to relocate many of the businesses that were there into other areas. This will not only keep Tottenham Hotspur in the neighbourhood, it will give a brand new stadium that will allow them to grow for years to come.
