This season has gone relatively well so far, minus a few irritating injuries to key players. We’re unbeaten in the league and FA Cup at White Hart Lane so far, We’ve only lost twice in the league this campaign and we sit 2nd. Yes it’s frustrating to go to a side that seems to have little hope of Premier League survival and draw 0-0, however, football is a competitive sport.
To explain myself here I’ll use Arsenal’s defeat to Watford on Tuesday night as my example. The majority of football fans (or so called football experts) would have had that as an Arsenal win, I would've as well. Does that mean Watford roll over for them? Does this mean Watford should come to play defensively and offer little going forward unless gifted to them? No. The Premier League is meant to be the most competitive league in Europe. No game is really a given, there’s more teams fighting for the chance of winning the league or finishing in the top 4 than in other leagues. There’s also always an entertaining battle for survival no matter how many teams involved.
Sunderland holding us to a 0-0 at the Stadium of Light, United being held 0-0 at home to Hull, Arsenal losing 2-1 at home to Watford. These are all relatively unexpected results but that’s what a competitive league looks like. The teams nearer the bottom need to pull their seasons together and match any team on their day if they want to continue as a top flight club. The same way that the teams at the top not only have to beat the smaller teams but also the clubs around them fighting for glory to be in with the chance of winning the league or finishing in the top 4.
Our issues now are the lack of Vertonghen and Rose. We’re yet to know how long Danny Rose is out for but it’s not looking extremely positive. It’s moments like these that are season defining. How will Spurs' management take the team forward. Who will come in to hopefully fill their places? Does the formation change from a back 3 with wing backs, to a back 4 again? Will Wimmer, Carter Vickers and Davies all step up to the plate or continue to leave Spurs fans with a painful doubt about their previously formidable defence. Only time will tell, the most we can do as fans of the club is to have meltdowns on twitter and moan that other Spurs fans may not share your opinion.
Coming up today we play host to Middlesbrough, who sit 15th and only 2 points above the relegation zone. A win for the visitors can see them potentially move closer to safety and closer to Bournemouth who sit 14th but 5 points above them.
A crucial victory for us over Boro can see us maintain our position in the league. With Chelsea and Arsenal going head to head this weekend it’s a good opportunity to get the three points and either shut the gap between us and Chelsea or move further away from Arsenal.
