And So It Begins - The Levy Transfer Policy Debacle

Article by e-Spurs Writer Gary Smith (UK)

No surprise to all us long suffering supporters. David Villa has gone elsewhere. He may have not have been the ideal signing but he certainly could have been a Klinsmann in the making. Yet another example of Levy leaving it too late and trying to prove he is a trader in the market. At this rate we will still end up with an insufficient strike force. Its been too many seasons now when Spurs have been on the brink and just needed that extra push and Bale for all his prowess and exploits next season cannot be expected to shoulder all the responsibility.

So we still have Negredo and Soldado on the radar - who would probably be good acquisitions as they have excellent goalscoring records, but this policy of waiting and baiting has just proved fruitless over the years. Do we really want to end up with another Saha in January or an Adebayor who is more concerned with his income? So either Levy has a good strategy in mind or its another lost possibility.

Damaio is now rumoured to be a Southampton target and although he may have been a thorn in our ambitions what does that say about the club?

Our midfield certainly looks stronger and hopefully will produce more goals but the attacking element which let us down so badly last season has yet to be addressed. Soldado may be expensive but he has a solid pedigree as does Negredo and Levy, if he wants the club to progress further, should bite the bullet and cough up.

The movement of Villa to another club is a huge disappointment and unfortunately a fairly accurate reflection on Tottenham's transfer policy under Levy.

Let's hope he surprises us and before the beginning of the season - when it will be too late.

Some of us remember (pre Levy) when Tottenham were scrabbling around trying to sign the likes of John Hartson and Andy Booth.

Levy has generally done well in the transfer market for Spurs.

David Villa will turn 32 this season. If he aint on a free, Spurs don't need him.

Benteke, Adebayor and Harry Kane would be enough for us with one up front.

Defoe is the odd man out. The only thing I would slag Levy for was not bringing back Berbatov when he was on a free last season. Proven quality, no risk and would have got us top three never mind top four.

Clearly Villa wanted to stay in Spain. It has nothing to do with our transfer policy. Obviously we could have matched (and according to several reports we actually bettered Athletico Madrid's offer) and almost certainly we would have paid him better wages. He opted to stay in Spain. End of story.

"Yet another example of Levy leaving it too late and trying to prove he is a trader in the market. "

If you have some inside knowledge about what went on share it with us. Otherwise you are just guessing and wasting our time. Maybe we didn't want him because better options are lined up. Maybe we did but he wanted to stay in Spain, in which case what was Levy supposed to do?

IN LEVY I DO NOT TRUST,HIS TRANSFER POLICY IS TERRIBLE,HE LEAVES THINGS TO THE LAST MOMENT TO SAVE PAYING WAGES UNTIL THEN.HE IS THEN USUALLY TOO LATE ANYWAY.I WILL NOT BE HAPPY UNTIL HE GOES,WHICH WILL PROBABLY BE NEVER.I HAVE SUPPORTED SPURS SINCE I WAS 12,I AM NOW 81.I AM SO TIRED OF LEVY,HE IS MAKING ME FEEL QUITE ILL.

Villa would have been a great aquisition but was not tp be as he wanted to have CLF and stay in Spain; no big deal. What really is a big deal though is starting another campaign without at least one proven goal scorer being added to the side. If that happens then every fan will have the right to get on Levy's back because however good or bad people might think he has been in the past, this is the one thing that should guarentee us a top four spot at the very least. Come on man, get on with it!

How do you know Villa wanted to come to Spurs? The fact is since we qualified for CL our wage bill has rocketed!
We haven't got the money a lot of supporters think we have. I'm sure if a couple of good deals come our way levy will act but they have to be within budget especially regarding wages?,
I'd be happy with one more body up front and another forward player such as Nani or Ashly young!
Another left back would be a bonus but I doubt that will happen in this window.
We also need to remember even me, lol that we have a decent crop of young guys coming through, they deserve a sniff at the first team squad for all there hard work especially Rose Carroll and Townsend who should never have been allowed to leave in the January window.
I also think Levy is thinking about Remy at QPR and the possible outcome of the allegations made against him!
Remy may be a good option if the allegations prove false, him and Beteke would be good signings but we would have to act quickly as Liverpoool will have another £40m plus to invest once Suarez leaves!

Yes levy made a huge error not getting a body in January lets hope he's learned from it, I doubt it but we live in hope!

Here's an idea, lets forget everything Levy has done because Villa wants to stay on Spain. Good plan. Can I have your season tickets then?

David Villa must have heard of our regular negative boo boys and decided not to risk being the next target.

  11. Daniel Levy you have let us down again. We do not need bargain basement players any more if we want to participate in the Champions League we need good players who are not scared to come to play for us because you try to get them to play for us as cheaply as possible. If I was a half decent player the last team I would want to play for is one that will not pay me what I am worth. Please decide if you want the same as we want from the club and that is not positions 4 or 5 but 1, 2 or 3 which is where we should have been if you had purchased the right players at an earlier time rather getting the bargain basement ones. Your only descent players that came towards the end were Van Der Vaart, Dembele and Dempsy. Vertogen, Sigurssson and Holby were earlier players. You even nearly lost Lloris last year. Please stop messing about and get the forwards we need and make sure they are good ones. Baldini sure knows who they are

Ah, the same old delusional people who think Levy will show some ambition this transfer window when he hasn't for the last 5 windows

As for not signing 30+ players, Saha, Nielsen and Friedel spring to mind

Re Paul Farrugia,I put my small bit in capitals so that stupid people like you can read it.I am a spurs fan.the first match I went to see was Spurs v Arsenal at White Hart Lane when Dennis and Leslie Compton were playing for Arsenal.i have been a fan of Spurs since then.Perhaps you wont even reach 81,and have all the great memories that I have or Spurs.Lets hope one day you might show some respect for elderly people, but I very much doubt it.

  14. Mr Farrugia if you were a half decent player the top clubs would now you worth and not want you, there are already too many half decent and decent players demanding and getting paid obscene wages. Is any footballer worth the wages paid by most clubs? The Cardiologist who run onto the pitch and saved the life of the footballer who had a heart attack would earn an average wage less than half Rooney's weekly wage.
The anonymous contributor immediately following Mr Farrugia who says "reading this makes him feel a bit embarrassed was presumably referring to his own insulting, moronic views.

Lets look logically at the striker situation. Defoe underperformed after xmas and adebayor was unfit injured suspended in africa or disinterested for almost the whole season. But Bale did a strikers job and dempsey added a fair few. If we get a 20 goal a season striker will bale score as many? We played to bales strengths so any other striker is going to struggle for chances. How many teams have 2 or 3 strikers scoring 20+ each.? So what do we need if we keep bale? Are any of the options going to do a lot better than defoe or ade if we keep bale and he keeps scoring? And if bale goes back to being a provider will ade and defoe return to 2011/12 form?

Can't really understand what all the fuss is about. Can't really blame Levy on this one...
I’m not going to deny I would have liked to have seen Villa at the lane this season but he is going to 32 by the end of the year and has signed a 3 year contract.
Can we really see ourselves competing for trophies with a 35 year old, 100K+ a week up front? Too much of a gamble in my books. Villa was never the solution for us. He would of had one good season and then what? Not worth the millions in wages that what Mr Levy must of thought and I agree.

Lets not get carried away here. We were title contenders a couple of days ago with the signing of Paulinho and after missing out on a 32 year old with a broken leg we are not going anywhere. Have faith people!!!

On the other hand Benteke has had a good season (15 goals from open play) so lets not go too crazy on him either. One word comes to mind…BENT and we don't want to go there again.

We need a striker and maybe a left back and I think they will come. AVB remains calm and so should we. Soldado is our man and the only striker we have bid on. Proven goal scorer that can help us close on that 1 point with Arsenal and give Bale his CL music!

  17. I notice that the people who took offence at what I said did not have the decency to put their name on the answer. To the gentleman who talked about his age and my respect I am 75 years old and have been following Spurs since the late 50s when I came to England. I have put my views above my name and I do not mind if you feel the way you do. Tottenham Hotspur have been a part of my life even during my time away in the forces. I want to see Tottenham in one of the top three positions. I have wanted this all the time I have followed the team. Misters anonymous put something useful about the situation and name the names of the players you think Tottenham should have in the present team to bring us to one of the top three positions instead of having a go at people. Yes I do think that not enough is being done to bring the team to the required strength, which I hope is done as quickly as possible to allow the new players to gel in with the old ones before the season starts. The time is now before the training starts.

I don't understand all these Levy bashers. Can you not remember where we were before he arrived. The vast majority of things he has done have been excellent, training facilities, new ground proposals, manager recruitments and player investments. A couple of blips were getting rid of George Graham at the wrong time and hiring Juande Ramos but not much else. Yes Spurs sometimes leave transfers a bit late but why do you think that is Levy's fault. Unfortunately players take their time to see if they get a better offer rather than Spurs trying to save a few pound.

  19. To be honest, part of me would have liked to have seen Villa at the Lane, however i don't believe that signing a 30+ player (who lets be honest has had his best days already) would have been showing ambition in the transfer market. Signing Soldado, 28, or Negredo, 27, who are proven goalscorers in La Liga and have a good 3-4 years left at the top level. This would be showing ambition in the transfer window.... This would show that the club is ready to bring in the proven quality we need to get where we want to be as Spurs Fans. I'm not just talking Champions League either. I honestly believe adding a top striker in an already very good squad and with the managerial changes everywhere, this season will be or best shot at winning the league.... Surely the rewards that would come from that.... even Levy must be thinking about.
